Day 4, 5 & 6
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
Street to Welsh Bicknor to Clun to Chester.
Well, it's Friday night. I'm lying on my bed in Chester Backpackers and writing this for the first time in three days. We didn't have a good enough signal the last two days.
So, Day 4. Street to Welsh Bicknor. This was a tough day (though, you'll have gathered by now that they all tend to be). Crossing the Severn Bridge was definitely the highlight for me. Such a wonderful structure. And the views up the Severn Estuary, just gorgeous. Again, we were blessed with beautiful weather. Though you have to drink a lot, the sun is preferable to the rain. No doubt! This was a long day. Over 70 miles and our destination, Welsh Bicknor has to be one of the worst signposted Hostels ever. In fact, there was no sign and the instructions were shamefully short on detail. You have to find a sliproad to a football training centre. Cross a hidden footbridge and walk along 300m of river bank to find the hostel. With no signage from the road. Not good. Lost Tom and it took him an hour to find his way over.
Nice place, once you've found it though!
The trip was pretty hilly. In fact the hardest part about the C2C recommended route is that it tends to be scenic. I've had about all the scenic views I can take now. I'd like some flat roads please!
Day 5. Welsh Bickor to Clun.
Thursday. Today we rode on our own times. So Tom set off first and I followed about 40 minutes later. Unfortunately Tom had a bike mis-hap and had to walk 6 miles into Hereford to get it fixed. 19 stone into a chain doesn't go, so it turns out! So while he had it fixed I hot footed it to Clun and arrived around about 4pm. Not bad an about an hour before anyone else turned up. Time enough to get to the supermarket and prepare dinner. Spaghetti bolognese in Will's way. Some will have tasted this before at my flat. I'm sad to say, that it needed it's regular dose of Port. So did the chef. We eventually had a really rather good supper and went to bed around half nine.
Day 6. Clun to Chester.
Friday. Well, legs will be legs and today the legs were not too happy. More specifically, Tom's legs. Again, we had a hilly start before eventually hitting the Cheshire Flats. What the casual reader needs to be aware of, is that we're carring about 15kgs of kit on bikes already weighing about 12kgs each. We're then riding up and down hills for about 7 hours a day, every day. This is going to take it's toll of you're not used to it. By lunchtime, and after a decent Fish
