Well, I spoke too soon- about the accomodation, that is... We found our way to Batina with no trouble and the house looked just like the photos - literally right on the banks of the Danube! . We were welcomed by Milena and ushered inside . The house is amazing, dating from the 18th century...and faithfully restored. Geoff twigged immediately but I didn't... The ad said "entire house" which means we have an "entire house " - to ourselves !!! Not so! We have a bedroom in the house... And the lovely Milena and her equally charming husband Ivan, do not speak a word of English! But we have our wish- no tourists, no wi Fi, just pure, traditional rural Croatia, how lucky are we?
We have had the most wonderful evening with lots of laughter. We were treated to "fat bread" with paprika, the sweetest peaches off the tree, home made sundried tomatoes in oil, rakija made from pears, homemade red wine -and that was before dinner! After dinner of soup with homemade noodles, schnitzel, potatoes and paprika pečena ( my absolute new favourite) , Milena gave me a bread making lesson ! I'm in heaven!
Ivan has at least ten fishing rods and has invited Geoff fishing tomorrow or the next day. Plus Baranje County is famous for its wines and we are right in the heart of it! The language isn't a problem, we all get there in the end with lots of laughing on the way. We couldn't feel more welcome. Our only niggling concern is that I'm sure they said they are going to cook us the local fish dishes which means more carp... No doubt we will acquire the taste.... The next few days are going to be a hoot!
