Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
After our first lovely long lie-in in a whole month, we woke to pack and check out, jamming our 2 huge backpacks, extra bag full of what we'd bought, and two daypacks filled to the brim into a tuk-tuk- what a sight we must have looked! We were struggling to decide how to fill the four days we had left in Delhi, as we'd already explored much of what it has to offer, so we headed to Connaught Place, a modern shopping area set around a massive roundabout, where Indians shop for Levis! We had fun trying on clothes and exploring the shops, then decided to head to Costa Coffee for hot chocolate and cake. We walked in and couldn't believe our eyes when Liv spotted the one person we were waiting to hear from, her godmother Aunty Gilly! After a loud reunion, we sat with her and her Indian friend, chatting for over an hour, and she invited us to a wedding with her friend Poonam that evening. It was just so incredible that we happened to be in the same coffee shop at exactly the same time right in the middle of Delhi! Poonam's driver dropped us home in a very swanky car, and waited as we showered and made ourselves up in our most glamorous clothes (not very!). We arrived at Poonam's house and were greeted by her cute Andrex puppy, then after Gilly dressed into her gorgeous sari, we headed out to the wedding about 9.30. On the way we passed about 4 other weddings, as today is a particularly auspicious day, all the women were wearing the most elaborately decorated saris, with beautiful jewellery and make-up. The wedding was so bright and colourful, and full of loud music, all ornately decorated with garlands of flowers, and stalls and stalls of food, drinks, snacks, and puddings, even fresh fruit! The groom arrived dressed elaborately with money pinned all over his jacket, on horseback, surrounded by his family dancing down the road. He was greeted by the bride's family who exchanged flower garlands, then he walked through to a kind of throne and awaited the arrival of the bride. It was packed inside with hundreds of people. The bride arrived surrounded by family, who were holding a string net over her head. She had the most beautiful sari on and was covered head to toe in jewellery and henna. She sat next to the groom and they exchanged garlands. We then had the most incredible meal, followed by delicious puddings, every sweet we'd tried on our trip, and chocolate souffle! There were loads of chefs topping up the supplies so we went back many times! As the second half of the ceremony probably wouldn't start until gone 1 in the morning, we left just after 12, walking out past an old granny in a wheelchair who was actually identical to the granny from the Kumars! It was such an incredible experience and we felt so lucky we had bumped into Gilly and been given the chance to attend such a beautiful Indian wedding!
