Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
Today we missed our alarm so woke in a panic, so rushed to our first free breakfast and stuffed ourselves, then headed out to the GPO (post office) to watch our parce of silk and scarves impressively stitched up and sealed with wax...a definite relief to send it home and get rid of the extra weight in our backpacks!
We then began our tour of delhi by coach, starting at a Hindu temple. It was bright and colourful from the outside and we had to remove our shoes to go inside. The architecture was impressive as was the size and detail, and was set in beautiful gardens. It was where Mahatma Gandhi used to pray and where he attended his first puja, he was on his way here when he was assassinated. It was wierd to see swastikas everywhere, as we didn't realise the Nazis had adopted this symbol from the Hindus! It actually means something like best wishes and is in fact anticlockwise as opposed to the Nazi swastika. Outside we were once again bombarded by people trying to sell things, and we saw our first snake charmer.
Next we went to a huge Sikh temple, which was absolutely stunning. It was a lot more simple, pure white but with a huge gold domed roof. Here we had to cover our heads and remove our shoes, and it was very busy with worshippers. Inside were people moving in a clockwise direction around a central holy book which was constantly being brushed, and a band of men singing songs. There was lots of tinsel and bright decorations everywhere, and outside an enormous lake which once again we walked round in a clockwise direction. There was even someone bathing in it right by the sewer pipes from the toilet block! There were huge fish in the lake too.
Next was the India Gate again, where some Indian guys insisted we posed for a photo with them, our first experience of our minor celebrity status in India! We then drove past the Parliament houses again and Jantar Mantar of Delhi (an astonomy observatory although we will visit the biggest one in Jaipur), onto the Gandhi memorial, the point where he was cremated. It was set amongst rolling green hills and decorated with flowers and a constantly burning flame, very peaceful.
Later we went with 3 people from our tour to a food stall which resembled a fast food counter on the street. It was lovely food, like a crispy pancake stuffed with vegetables- dos masala. We bought some biscuits to stock up for the train journey and some fresh fruit. We arrived at Old Delhi station and were soaked with a sudden downpour of rain (luckily the only rain we've seen!), and it was so busy! The bunks of the train were surprisingly nice, stacked 3 high , Liv took the middle bunk and Hannah was on the top, it was actually boiling hot! We were in a bay with Rebecca from Singapore (who we will hopefully meet again when we visit there later) and two Americans, Val and David. We chatted about all their travels around the world and found out that Val has been to 49 of the 50 states of the USA (not Maine!) and David has set about the task of teaching us to recite all 50 states in alphabetical order!
