Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
Before we start on today we have to tell you about last night! We decided to take a relaxing cycle rickshaw ride around Old Delhi just to take in the sights, we were really pleased they only wanted to charge us 50 rupees which is about 70p but soon we could see why....it was closing up time and one of the scariest things we have ever seen! We were clinging on for dear life sat at a stupid angle with nothing to hold us in and no foot rests, and the roads which aren't very wide in old delhi anyway were absolutely packed-people were bringing massive boxes home and just walking amongst the street, it was dark and misty and really smelt! There are no pavements and cows all over the place, and when we were sat there in full view with our cameras etc with hundreds of indian people staring about 2 inches all around us its terrifying! The traffic kept changing directions and in the end after about an hour and nearly getting squashed between vans and piles of boxes our poor cyclist decided to do a u-turn and we headed back to the hotel after only about 100m! We just can't describe how intense it was...not something we'll be doing again in a hurry!
We had a bad sleep despite going to bed really early as the fan makes awful noises and you can hear the road, but still managed to sleep in til midday as our room doesn't have a window. We decided to head to the Nehru Memorial museum this time by autorickshaw which is much safer! The museum was set in the house and gardens of the first Indian prime minister's house and was beautiful with fountains and palm trees. Inside some of the rooms were preserved to the state of when he lived there and we read all about the setting up of the republic. An indian man decided to make friends with us and continued to then follow us around the rest of the day which was a bit annoying, so we eventually got rid of him later on that afternoon by going into the 5 star Claridges hotel and paying a small fortune for lunch/tea! Before that we went to the Indira Gandhi memorial which was the actual house and spot she was assassinated in, and the Gandhi Smitri which was Mahatma Gandhi's house and showed the last walk he took to pray before he was shot. They had loads of scary dolls depicting his life and upstairs hundreds of interactive exhibits telling you about him. The guides had to show us what to do by pressing certain buttons and they were clearly very impressed by this technology and thought they were amazing us! The journey there was brilliant, as it was lovely and sunny and took us through all the parliament buildings and the India Gate- a view of the nice Delhi compared to the poverty we saw last night. We also saw some more monkeys and drove past the Janpath market which we'll definitely be going back to to expolore!
The Claridges was the fanciest hotel you have ever seen, it's about 6,000 rupees a night and we spent about 3 times as much as our meal last night on some soup in the cafe! It looks like a brilliant place to go for new year but the tickets are 1,500 rupees between us which works out as only about 15 quid but when its in rupees it seems like such a fortune so we're not sure yet! We went to the bakery there though to buy some bread because we are sick of curry type foods already oh dear! We also got some crisps and sweets to snack on because there is nothing like this around!
We were so pleased to haggle our autorickshaw back to the hotel down to 5 rupees bearing in mind we were on the other side of Delhi, but just as it was going so well it broke down and we were stranded! We then ended up paying 40 rupees as no one else would take us for less at that time of day and it was going dark, very annoying! It's a bit scary going outside our hotel (especially as we're in old delhi with the rif raf) so we're in for the night now, calculating how much it will cost to stay a night in the claridges (a bit much we think!).
