Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
Welcome to our Rajasthan Safari tour of India! Most of this has already been and gone but because we've been so busy we're updating it all now from our own diaries so you'll know what we got upto! Starting at new years eve....bit of a disaster! As Hannah was ill from what we think was tap water mixed in with the OJ, we didn't really have much choice but to stay in the room for the countdown, though we could definitely hear the noise from celebrations on the street. We started the day by getting a really early morning rickshaw to the Crafts museum, starting early as it was our last day on our own before the tour. The museum was a bit of a disappointment though, it seemed very deserted and was full inside of people trying to sell us their crafts, much like one of the delhi bazaars. We ended up just looking in their lovely shop then left! We then spent the rest of the day at museums. We started at National Gallery of Modern Art which was absolutely brilliant, the collection of paintings were so unusual and stunning. Even the building was beautifully decorated and there were lots of modern sculptures in the grounds. Then we walked through India Gate, a huge war memorial surrounded by parks, which leads onto the main road down to the parliament buildings, which is where the huge parade will be happening on Republic Day on 25th January i think. They were already setting out thousands of seats all down the road. We walked to the National Museum whichwas another brilliant place, we barely touched it, though saw some great exhibitions on money, tapestry and a highly secure room full of really expensive jewellery, massive solid pieces of gold filled with precious jewels. We are definitely considering going back to have another look around. It made us laugh, as both museums were charging separate amounts for entrance fees for indian and foreign nationals, really blatently on the boards. The National Museum was Rp 2 for indian nationals, Rp1 for students, and Rp 150 for foreign nationals! Luckily we had our student cards so paid a rupee each but what a difference!
