Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
We have had another brilliant day! After dragging ourselves out of bed at 8.30 this morning after another bad night (mosquito nets falling down on us and still being on english time!) we arrived downstairs to a huge buffet breakfast for only 135 rupees. Some of it was a bit gros like the coffee, but we had pancakes and juice and still feeling ok at the moment!
After talking to Poonam (Liv's godmothers' good friend) on the phone we decided it was best to hire a taxi cab for the whole day which cost us only 650 rupees, not even a tenner, and drove out about 60 km to find Poonam and her cancer centre. We eventually found it, our drive took us past all the embassies which was interesting! When we arrived it was in a lovely area, very different to the Delhi we had experienced, and the building they were in was lovely. It was her father's house and her 'haven' was down in the basement. It was so lovely to meet a very friendly face and Poonam was very lovely, kind and helpful! We met many of her friends and even her sister, and she introduced us to her little children who come to the centre to learn and play each day, and explained the kind of work she does. Meeting all the children was brilliant and a real insight into real Indian life. It was also so heartwarming to feel so welcome there.
We left Poonam about midday with some directions to some good shopping centres and areas, which our taxi driver kindly waited outside while we shopped! He was a lovely man who spoke brilliant english and almost took us under his wing!
First we went to a Rajasthan factory where we could buy any colour/pattern silk saris under the sun! It was such a sight, and they were helpful (although quite good salesmen!) showing us how to wear saris and explaining all the different kinds of materials etc. These were cheaper to buy here rather than the emporiums where they add taxes and charges, but we still paid 1600 rupees per sari which although it felt like we were spending a fortune, this is still only about 20 pounds. They are absolutely gorgeous and we ended up buying four or five each! Our saris are also being made completely so cannot wait to see them!
We also checked out some emporiums then headed to Janpath market, where the taxi driver (Bobby!) was very dubious to let us out as it much less safe than the emporiums where there are guards on the doors. The market was brilliant though and we got to try haggling for cheaper prices. We both came away with 5 or 6 paschminas each which are just beautiful and cost only about 2 pounds each, and some wall hangings. We will definitely go back for little craft pieces and perhaps some cheap shoes, which they have in hundreds of different styles, colours and loads of cool sparkly shoes. We don't think we'll be able to carry too much around rajasthan though so will perhaps wait for a while! It is quite difficult with the prices as it always seems like we are spending a fortune even though compared to england it is nothing!
We are planning on getting an early night tonight, particularly as tomorrow will be a late one! We can also then get up early tomorrow when we plan to visit the crafts museum, the berhauli archaeological park and perhaps the zoo! We are sticking to nezlamuddin (not sure if that's spelt right but its how it's pronounced!) area of delhi as we think our tours on sunday and monday will probably cover most of new delhi and old on our return in a months time.
