We left St. Lucia for more of the city life as we headed into Durban.
Durban is the third largest city in South Africa and was originally started many years ago as a shipping port, for ships travelling from around the world to India. We passed the Moses Mabhida stadium and drove along North Beach taking in all the sights and sounds of the big city, as we had not been near one for the past six days.
We arrived at our hostel the Happy Hippo, the most incredible hostel I've ever stayed in. The whole look and feel was very much South African, each dorm room having its own theme and was decorated in its own theme, even down to one by the name of 'Shabeen' which had beer cans as wallpaper. Some of the other themes included the Zulu room, the sangoma room and the shongololo room. After lunch at the Happy Hippo everyone went their separate ways.
Max and Dylan had a fun filled afternoon going down water slides, watching a dolphin show and walking the promenade at uShaka Marine World. The other Durban locals headed back home to meet up with their family and friends for a holiday in their home town.
Megan, Sean and Jade decided to mission all the way along the Durban North beach for a swim in the sea and an exciting time at the fun fair. It was the most awesome thing we went on the Shells, the UFO, the Coco Pan and the Gondola from which you can view the whole of Durban North beach. For dinner we all congregated on the roof top to sample Durban's finest cuisine, Bunny Chow - spicy curry in a half loaf of bread. After dinner we were entertained by some Zulu gumboot dancers who taught us their dances. We then once again partied into the night with all the other backpackers and some locals until the bar closed.
