Everyone woke up excited, nervous and scared as we packed up our tents in Tsitsikamma for the much anticipated bungee jump at the Bloukrans Bridge. It is the highest bungee jump in the world, measuring at 216 metres!
It was a morning of mixed emotions for us which ranged from tears as we started to walk towards the bridge, to singing Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika while walking along the bridge (and trying not to look down) and eventually to a party filled with upbeat music and dancing at the top of the bridge as we watched one person after the other jump off the bridge.
Lerato was the first to go with complete confidence and bravery as he jumped off the bridge. The singing and dancing continued as Dylan got strapped up for the next jump. Once you've jumped, one of the workers will abseil down to pull you back up to the platform.
Lerato arrived back at the top to a warm welcome of cheers, hugs and congratulatory high fives, and so this continued throughout the morning with Pearl going third. If there was anyone with no fear it was her as she danced up to the edge of the bridge and did the bungee backwards! Glenn was next, and then Sean, as well as Wesley's first attempt before Maretha did the elevator jump. Philile also did a backwards jump before Wesley's second attempt, and as he still couldn't manage to comprehend the idea of throwing himself off a bridge, in the end he did not jump.
Rose was next to jump followed by Max, Lugelwa, Thoko, Ntsike, Mpho and Megan who did not even make it to the edge of the bridge and also did not jump. I was next and still trying not to look down was followed by Lebo, Jacque and Dwayne who was the last to jump. The bungee assistants were very professional and encouraging and I was blown away by their high energy and enthusiasm. The partying and singing continued all way to the bottom of the bridge, and as the adrenaline and energy was high, we all looked down to see what we had accomplished.
Back at the bottom of the bridge, we watched the videos of everyone's jump before lunch at the Bourkrans restaurant where we watched some other people do the same jump.
We continued on to Knysna where we spent the afternoon in the waterfront celebrating and eating oysters. We then went to our campsite where we had dinner and passed out as everyone was in bed by half past nine, listening to the funny quirks emanating from Dwayne's tent.
