When we arrived Jen, Nora, and I discovered that the supply closet at the school was still relatively stocked with paints, crayons, etc... we were slightly confused by this because every year the girls who come bring supplies with them, as did we, and we haven't seen the teachers utilize them. When we asked, Sister Stella told us that many of the teachers are unsure how to use what is in the closet. As we have been teaching the last few weeks we have been trying to incorporate paints, crayons, children's books etc... into our lessons and explaining what the supplies are and how they are used. Today Nora and my teacher agreed to let us show them the materials we have availabe in the closet. After school was out we took Judith and Annet into the supply closet and explained how all the different materials were sorted, what they could be used for, etc... They actually grabbed a few things to take back to their classrooms so other teachers wouldn't get them first. They were so excited about what we were showing them and were even fighting over some of the materials (jokingly) as to which of the Nursery classrooms they should belong in. They were so excited and kept thanking us. Nora and I were overjoyed about their excitement to use the materials. We are hoping to find a time to show the remaining teachers the materials and have Jen show her teacher as well.
During one of my lessons last week I had my students write their numbers with chalk on the cement floor. Now every morning when I walk into the classroom I see my students writing on the floor with chalk or I can tell they have been writing with chalk because they are covered in it.
When Jen, Nora, and I all teach together we focus on Music on Thursdays. We have been teaching them all sorts of church songs that we remember from Catholic grade school, and consequently always have grade school church songs stuck in our heads. Most of the teachers ask to keep the lyrics hanging up in their classroom. We can always tell when they have been practicing because Sister Stella comes home humming the tunes.
