When we got up on Thursday morning for our run with the neighborhood kids it was pitch black outside. Sister Mary told us this was because they are currently in the rainy season here, although we haven't gotten much rain. It doesn't get light until about 7ish and normally starts getting dark around 7:30pm. We all crawled back into bed and have since then stuck to our afternoon runs. At school Nora, Jen, and I all decided to do music with the older class. We used the chant "Grandma's going to the grocery store" but added our own twist by changing the lyrics to the outdoor market and changing the items bought to avocados, bananas and other items we have seen around here. We also had tamborines we let the students use. They all seemed to have a blast. Then we had them sing a few songs that they know with us. Our favorite is shake shake the mango tree. We have even started singing it ourselves around the convent and unfortunately gotten it stuck in our heads on numerous occasions. On Friday we were each in our own classroom, but we all focused on farm animals. We printed off a picture of a cow, goat, and horse for the students to color. Thankfully the nurses were good sports and helped us hand copy around 115 copies to take to our students. we also had two books to read. In the morning I wasn't able to do much with my students and when I was going to have them draw a picture of their families to hang in the hallway, my teacher said I should just let them draw whatever they wanted. I was a little worried that I wouldn't get to work with them as much as I had hoped, but then in the afternoon I was able to read the students a story. I didn't actually read much, mostly I just pointed out the farm animals and the sounds they made. The students were laughing the whole time, probably at what I sounded like to them. I was glad they were warming up to me. All the other classes in the school have seen the other girls come to the school every year, but since my class is the youngest they have never experienced that before. In the afternon I asked the students if they would sing me a song and they sang this song where they say... I know Englishy... and repeat that 3 times and then I would point to an object and they would say.. That is a ... and repeat that 3 times. I clapped along with them and then they started imitating the way I was clapping by doing it to the right or over their head etc... They are so adorable! I can't wait until I get to work with them three times next week!
Jen, Nora, and I also taught P.E. to the P4 class on Friday. We just had them do some simple stretching and had them play soccer, except that every time we asked if they wanted to play soccer they would get into a circle. Sister Stella told us to call it futball next time and they would understand what we were saying.
