Hmm......so today was an interesting day. To begin, Jessica and I were supposed to me at the Hauptbahnhof at 12 to go and see if we could find the Isisheiligtum, which was supposedly somewhere around the center of the city. Well, Jessica flaked out because it was, as she said, a little cold.....wimp. So I went alone. It wasn't that hard to find, but I did have a little help. See I went to the Mainz tourist office first before I did anything. Hmm.......that was interesting. See I wanted to go in and be all like German so I did and was like, "Guten Tag, ich suche das Isis und Mater-Magna Heiligtum, wo liegt das von hier?" Now, that might not be the EXACT way to ask the question, but it sufficed and got the point across. So then I needed to ask for the aqueduct, and that's where the issue arose from; I don't know that word. So I was like, " Umm.....Ich suche den Aqueduct....." but that didn't go over well, so I fell back on the old safety net and asked if she spoke English, which as is mostly the case when dealing with people from my generation, she did. She then showed me how to get there and I went on my way.
ONce I found the Isisheiligtum, I was amazed. It's not like out in the open or anything, rather it's hidden beneath this mall. The story goes, that the city of Mainz wanted to build this mall and in the process they found this temple. Well, since malls inevitably bring in major revenue, especially in cities where there is ONLY one mall, they decided to continue building the mall. Therefore, in order to save the temple, they just made it look like a store, and built around it. So, when you enter the mall, there's these glass doors, which look like doors going into a store, but when you enter them you then turn and go down some stairs and come out in the temple. It's got to be the most bizarre thing I think I have ever witnessed... anyways. After going to the temple, I caught a bus, a miracle in and of itself for school had just let out and I was swarmed by little Germanic children all cramming onto a bus, and met Jessica to go to the store. Well as it happened, I talked her into going to try to fine the old Roman Aqueduct, which was supposedly "gleich in der Naehe von der Uni" so we decided to look (even though she was cold....like the whole time...) Well, we found it, after of course walking through this odd garden commune, and getting a little lost in the mazes which were the communes) and it was totally worth the exploration. I mean every time I see something like this I just think, "Wow, and to imagine that this was done more than 2000 years ago.." that to me is just phenomenal! I really just cannot think of any other way to describe it. So, I took a ridiculous amount of photos, and Jessica freaked because it started to snow (a novelty for one who is from the DEEP South) so she called her dad and Ama to tell them that it was snowing....and action which I successfully caught on camera and thereafter uploaded onto facebook. All in all, the Temple/Aqueduct day was fulfilling and enjoyable. You totally have to look at my uploaded photos, they're awesome!!
