Oh, Heidelberg....wonderful, touristy Heidelberg. I know, I know, it's probably THE most touristy region in Germany, aside from Füssen and Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau, but I couldn't help myself, it's so close and I just had to go.
So, Jessica and I left the Hbf in Mainz pretty early because we had to both catch a train to Heidelberg, but we also had to inquire about her trip to France that she's taking in two weeks..... Anyways, so we went and we got our tickets, and we found out that we had to switch trains in Mannheim. That was interesting. But we managed, even though the train was really really full from Mannheim to Heidelberg. When we first got to Heidelberg I immediately went to the news stand in the Hbf so that I could get a travel guide to Heidelberg, which ended up being really useful. Then we went out and went to the Tourist office in order to find out just which bus we needed to take to get to the Schloss, which is indeed the most visited site in Heidelberg. So, we did that and then we went and found the bus, Jessica and I being pros at this since living in Mainz for oh what, a week, but it was awesome nonetheless. Then, as we were waiting for the Bus, these two guys came up to us and were like, "Hey, do you speak English" and we were like, "yeah". So yeah, their names were Allen and Frank and they were some type of game programers who were in Frankfurt just playing games for a job. It was kinda cool. So yeah, they decided to hang out with Jessica and me during the trip through Heidelberg, and I became the translator.....or better yet I was told that I was going to be the translator.
So we took the bus and went to the Schloss, which is really high on this hill and the hike to the top....was.....really exhausting, and mildly embarrassing. I was talking to this German woman on the way to the top and she was like, idk, 80 or something.....yeah she totally passed me and beat me to the top of the castle. I was thoroughly embarrassed. Nevertheless, we made it to the top of the mountain aka into the courtyard of the Schloss, and it was AMAZING! We walked around and looked at all of the gardens and stuff, but then Allen got hungry, so we went to eat. It was still cool though. Then we went and did a tour of the castle, and I had to ask for the tickets and when the tour started and all of that, but it was cool nonetheless. The Castle was amazing inside, even though it wasn't original, and I totally want to rent it out and have my wedding there.....only 400 euro. AWESOME! After looking around the Schloss and going to see the vat of wine that the size of some people's houses, we left and went in search of a Church. We found one. However, before we went into the church Jessica wanted to find a Sparkasse because she needed to withdraw some money and they charge the smallest fees when dealing with international withdraws. Well, we couldn't find one, so I was like, "Well, I just ask someone" so I did. I found this nice old couple sitting, well she was standing and he was in a wheelchair, so I figured they wouldn't run from me if I asked them, so I went up to them and was like, "Entschuldigung, ich suche ein Sparkasse, gibt es ein Sparkasse in der Nähe von hier?" And they looked at me like I was a freak and then really slowly the woman looked at me and said, 'I'm sorry, we don't speak German" and I felt like a total ass. Yeah, so it turned out that they were Americans on vacation in Heidelberg, and I was like, "Oh, ok. Well, I speak English because I'm an American too.....so thanks." I felt like a total ass.......
I don't rightly remember the name of the church, but it was Evangelical and not Catholic, therefore it was quite ugly on the inside, at least in my opinion. Anyways, we saw that the tower of the church was open and you could climb up it, so we decided to pay the Euro and go.....OMG!! It was AMAZING!! It was really high up and it took a long time to get up there, but it was totally worth the climb. You could see pretty much the entire city from there, and I don't think I've ever experienced anything else like that in my life. Don't get me wrong, it was very scary to be up that high in just a little tower, but it was amazing to just see around and enjoy the view. After descending the tower, we walked to thes bridge connecting Heidelberg on both sides of the Neckar River, and it's pretty famous for something or other, but I can't remember for exactly what right now. Also, there is a hotel in the vacinity where Mark Twain stayed, and Jessica took a photo of that. I didn't because I really just couldn't care less about Mark Twain.....English isn't my thing, if it was, I would've gone to England. Anyways, so after leaving the bridge we went and grabbed something to eat and then walked back to the Hbf. It was a pretty mellow ride home, since everyone was pretty tired, though the train from Mannheim to Mainz was friggin packed full, but that's ok, it eventually evened out and Jessica and I got a seat..... where to next.......
