Bonn…….hmm……Bonn.Well, it was interesting, but it probably would have been more so if I hadn't been in such a crummy mood when I got there. It wasn't like I woke up pissy, which is usually what happens; rather I got pissy when it took 3 hrs to make a 1.5 hr trip to the damn city!!It began innocently enough, Isaac and I met up at the Hbf at 9 so that we could be sure to get a good train to Koblenz, from where we had to take the train to Bonn.Well, we did get a relatively good train, and began our journey.Well, the train, along the way, decided that it was going to take almost two hours to get to Koblenz, when in reality it should only take between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes.Ergo, when I finally arrived in Koblenz, I was sufficiently pissed.Needless to say, I just couldn't let it go, and I ended up being pissed for the remainder of the day just because of this damn train.Well, not really, by the time we were done in Beethoven's house, I was fine, but by that time Isaac was pissed, so like I said, it just didn't end up being a good day all around.
Speaking of Beethoven, let's talk about his crib.It was pretty cool.Really, really old though, and kinda creepy to walk through b/c the doorways were tiny and the floor was always creaking. It made me think I was going to fall through at any moment and bust my ass on the floors below me, though that didn't happen. When Isaac and I began our search for Beethoven's joint, we got lost…twice. This, however, was more of Bonn's inability to have decent maps of their retardedly constructed streets than my inability to read the map correctly b/c there were streets missing. In any event, we finally figured out where Beethoven lived and proceeded to take photos of the outside and then went in to take the museum tour.It was interesting, though I'm not really a big music historian.Don't get me wrong, I LOVE history, I just don't find Beethoven's time period that interesting, so I merely wandered around the house looking while Isaac took time out to look/read/experience everything in the house. It was cool though, and when we finally finished going through all 3 floors of the house, we went down to the museum shop and looked for some postcards/souvenirs to buy. This, my friends, is where the other issues began. For some reason, the woman behind the counter refused to speak to Isaac in German, even though he would respond to every English thing she said in German, and this pissed him off.I can totally understand why though, because it's like you're trying to be intelligent and talk in this language, which we are here to learn, but she just wasn't having it.In any case, because she refused to talk to him in German, but then talked to me in German he got pissed, and was ready to leave Bonn right after we left Beethoven's house.Luckily though, I was able to talk him into staying and walking around for a bit more before we just packed up and left on our, what I was sure was going to be, 3 hour ride back to Mainz.
After leaving the Beethoven house, we made our way back to the main square of Bonn and took some fotos of the Rathaus, which has been entered by some of the most famous political figures of history: Napoleon, Kennedy, Konrad Adenaur, etc.It was cool. After making some fotos, we walked to the Munster Basilica to go in and check it out. This church was dedicated to St. Helena, who was Constantine the Great's mother.Anyways, we went in and it was pretty cool.We found some old coat of arms painted on the walls, and took some photos in front of them. Then I went down into the crypt where the bones of the two martyrs of Bonn lie buried.Tourists weren't allowed down there b/c it was only reserved for prayers and things. So I put my camera away and went down and said some prayers and such.It was pretty interesting. After leavingthe church, we walked around the Christmas market for a little while, and then finally made our way back to the train station to go home. All in all, it was an interesting trip, though I don't think I'd go back…..at least not until the spring when it's bright out and can maybe offer a little better view of the city.
