So, just so everyone knows, I totally went to Worms last month, but I didn't have my little Off Exploring Blog, so now I want to include Worms.....I know, it's probably not necessary, but I'm going to do it anyways.
So, Isaac, Julia, and I all decided that it would be fun to meet at the Hauptbahnhof and then go to Worms, since Isaac and I have never been there before....I don't remember if she'd been there before, but nevertheless, we all went. It was pretty cool, we got to ride on the RE for the first time, I mean we had to pay because our Studitickets only allow us to go to Darmstadt and then around to Worms, which is a really long way to get there, so we just paid the 7 Euro and went the quick way.
When we arrived, I was interested to see that the Hbf in Worms wasn't as big as the one in Mainz. I guess I just assume that all of these really famous cities are going to be like really big and have all of these big and modern things going on, but Worms didn't. Like, from talking to some of the Germans whom I've met here, Worms doesn't seem to be a big deal to them. I mean, Ann didn't even know what the Diet of Worms was (although in her defense it's called something completely different in German) but it's just not something big to them. Picture it like most American's don't know the intricacies of American history and most Germans don't know all that there is to know about German history.....ergo, The Diet of Worms or the Reichstag von Worms in German. Anyways, enough history lessons..so we went and tried to first find the Cathedral, which we did. And of course me, being the total history nerd that I am, I IMMEDIATELY searched out the chapel in which the Diet of Worms was held. It was actually a little disappointing. Like the chapel is kinda small, and there couldn't have been that many people in attendance when Martin Luther gave his famous " Here I stand" speech. Anyways, after we stood in there for a bit and I went all touristy and took some photos of myself within the Dom, we left and walked around a bit looking for other things of interest within the city. This meant that we ended up in the Nibelung Museum....which from what I learned was like a piece of literature along the lines of Beowulf, but just in German. We went through the museum, which was interesting when we went over the history part, but then there was this part where they talked about the long poem, and that bored me so I left while Julia and Isaac continued to go through the museum. They liked it, so that was cool.....but the second part just wasn't my cup of tea.
After going there, we went and found one of the oldest Jewish communities in Germany, which was destroyed during WWII. Since then, however, the Jewish community has come back to Worms and reestablished their Synagogue. It was pretty cool, and I totally took photos. After seeing this, we went to Subway, which lemme just say is SO MUCH BETTER IN GERMANY than in the US. Here they actually use real meat and none of that fake turkey crap. It was so good, and I really felt full/healthy after eating there. So, once that was over, we walked back to the Hbf and got back on the train to come back to Mainz. All in all, Id say that we all had fun and that it was a great day. I'm def going to have to go back to Worms again, maybe one day when it's really sunny outside, because I think that the Cathedral would look awesome when it was sunny outside and the sun was coming in the windows.....hmm.........Germany, how beautiful it is.
