Limberg an der Lahn… what an interesting little city.We decided to go here since it was within the free zone of our Studitickets, but it ended up being a pretty good choice.Isaac, Jessica, and I all went, and we woke up early to do so.We first had to go to Wiesbaden to change trains to get on this one called a VEC that goes all the way up the Rhein to where it connects to the Lahn, which is where Limburg is.We were all pretty excited, I more than the others because I thought that that was where Limburger Cheese came from, but alas, I was wrong.Apparently, there region from which the cheese comes is close to the border between the Netherlands and Germany, which is nowhere close to where Limburg an der Lahn is located.Anyways, not the point.
So we began our journey from Mainz, and it went pretty much without a hitch until we got to Limburg. After we left Limburg Bahnhof, I saw a church and I wanted to take a foto.So I broke out my camera and proceeded to take a picture.Well, as I was doing this, I heard this banging on a glass from the Burger King that I was standing next to.Well, I being the cautious American that I am, thought that I had per chance dropped something from my pocket when I took out my camera and some nice German in the restaurant was trying to signal me to let me know I dropped something. So, I turned around to see what they were banging about, and I came face to face (well more like face to glass to face) to a man flipping me off as he calmly eats his Whopper. So for a second I just calmly stared because I really had no clue what was going on.So I just took it with a grain of salt, thought maybe he was a little off his rocker/hated tourists and went on my way. This, should have been the end of that little episode, but unfortunately it wasn't the end of the attitude. When we arrived to the main square of the town, and attempted to take pictures, people had the same reaction as the man in the Burger King (excluding of course the gesture). They would walk right in front of your pictures and pretty much everyone would give you a dirty look if you got caught in the act of taking a picture. However, we just tried to ignore them, and move on with our trip. This was easier when we saw some German tourists who were treated the exact same way as us, so it must've just been the town.
After meandering around the main square of the city, we decided to look for the Dom of Limburg. The Dom there was supposed to be really pretty and it was built in the late 1200's so it was pretty old too. Also, Limburg was one of the few cities in Germany to not have anything happen to it from WWII and the bombings, so everything there is completely intact and looks just like it would have were one walking through the streets in the late 15th century. The alleys through the buildings were narrow (culminating in the narrowest patch in Germany on the road from Cologne to Frankfurt) and the streets were oddly crooked. But, it really felt like being in a Medieval German City, which was mostly the reason that we went there.Anyways, the Cathedral was really nice inside and it was also really pretty. However, we didn't have the chance to extensively go around and look inside because on the day we got there they were setting up for a live video program from the priest of the cathedral, so it was filled with news people and cameras and stuff. So we quietly went in, took some pics, then walked out down to the graveyard of the Cathedral. The graveyard was pretty cool in and of itself since it was really old, but we didn't stay long since we wanted to find the Bridge over the Lahn and the Römer 2-4-6 house.
After going down from the Cathedral, we went and found the House of the Seven Deadly Sins. This house was really cool in that they have the symbols of the Seven Deadly Sins carved onto the outside of the house. There was also a plaque outside explaining it all, which was also really cool. After seeing that, which was what Isaac had been searching for ALL MORNING, we decided to try to find the Römer 2-4-6 which is the Oldest Freestanding House in Germany. We finally found it, and it was Super cool!It was a little difficult to get pictures of since there are other houses around it, and it's kinda tall. But nevertheless, we succeeded in gaining our photos, and then took off towards the Lahn.We went over the bridge, which was built in the 14th century, and then took some pictures from the bridge looking towards the Cathedral and the river. The scene was really pretty, and I wish it had been brighter that day, because if it had it would have been even prettier.
As we took off back towards the train station, I suggested that we hike back to the Cathedral to go to see the castle which is directly behind the Cathedral and we had missed it earlier. So we went there, and that was really fun too, though the castle wasn't really big or anything like Neuschwanstein, but it was nice in its own little way. After having seen the castle, we trekked back down to the Bahnhof, and hopped on the train back to Mainz. All in all, I'd say Limburg was a fine little city.
