We found it! The 4 Gats cafe was a cultural mecca for modernist artists. Pictured behind us is a famous painting of bicycle which was an emblem of modernity. It was later replaced by a painting of an automobile, very modern indeed. We stopped in for a quick drink and snack.
We spent the morning roaming Bari Gothic. Jane and Kat did a little shopping. Jane bought a dress and Kat, a nightie with ice cream cones on it. There are many, many shoe stores.
For breakfast we found the most famous hot chocolate place in Barcelona that was 130 years old! It was temporarily closed for remodeling. Instead, we ate next door at the Lobo Bar. The service was slow and surly. The atmosphere was also enhanced by power drills on plAza and also by a impromptu accordion and clarinet concert by two street musicians . Julie refused to tip them on the grounds that they might be encouraged to play another song! She much preferred the power drill!
We then embarked on a second crusade to find the famous cafe called the four cats! This was the hangout for modernist artists including Casas and Utrillo. Also in attendance at this salon-like hangout were Gaudi and a young 17 year old named Pablo Picasso who held his first solo exhibition here in1899. He created the image for the four cats menu. The name came about from a reference to the saying "it will just be you and 4 cats" referring to the lack of customers that were initially forecast.
