Today was June 11. Julie was home ill. The girls and I traveled to Figueres where Salvador Dali's museum is located--north of Barcelona by train. We started the day by running 10 blocks at top speed to catch our ride to the trAin station! We had given them wrong address and did not realize until last minute. It was a great trip and the surrealist artwork was phenomenal! The girls loved it but Kat was especially interested, though some of the material was a little adult. Despite his surrealist work, he loved the Renaissance painters and Velasquez, especially the painting called the The maids Of honor. He was terribly dispirited by the drift of modern artists to abstraction is work and went back to some more formal work in the 40's. Much of his surrealist work was based on more formal work and proportions but used surrealist subject matter. He loved the sound of flies and would sometimes coat the tips of his mustache to attract flies. Their buzzing would inspire him to speed in his work.
Kat's take: I really enjoyed the Dali museum, but in my opinion dali is kind of creepy and weird. I especially enjoyed the jewelry. It was really pretty but a lot of the stuff is kind of weird. Like there was a ring that had a snail on it. And there was another ring that was a corset. I wondered what the Gala thought of Dali. All in all, I thought the Dali museum was very fun to visit.
Jane: it was kind of scary but quite interesting. He was a very odd man with a lot of talent
Robin: the painting that appears with this blog was a portrait of himself as "bacon." He had the wish that other contemporary artists would devour him as a form of sustenance and rediscover the old masters!
