DAli is seemingly apolitical in comparison with a Pablo Picasso who did Guernica in response to Nazi aggression. He left Spain during the war times and reposed in America - very comfortable in New York city where he was lionized and mingled with wealthy patrons. The painting that is shown here is called "The poetry of America". If you look closely, you can see some of Dali's implicit criticism of the u.s. There is the nation of Africa seen in the background melting as if to supply America with raw material or slavery. There is also a small Coca cola bottle seen as well -the first time that had ever been done! It is dripping black substance into a black puddle at the bottom. It anticipates pop art. Again, the painting is based formally on a renaissance work to achieve its symmetry. The image of an angel can be seen ascending from one the figures in conflict. This was to symbolize the hope for a brighter future -the better angel.
