Pictured: Robin and girls on the trail. This day's hiking had some of the steepest pitches with the most exposure and scrambling from rock to rock. Mostly though it was leisurely rambling through beautiful coastal areas, towns and coves, including some fancy large homes overlooking the Mediterranean. We reached some peaks on high cliffs, affording amazing views. We stopped for a delicious lunch at a beachside restaurant in a small town. We arrived in medieval town of Begur. The town is quaint with narrow streets and beautiful buildings. Hotel room was just ok and had some kind of allergen in it which nearly did jane in. The breakfast was phenomenal though: homemade custards (4 different kinds), pastries, fresh fruit, baked apples covered with chocolate, eggs and bacon, charcuterie, etc. Hotel Rosa does an amazing breakfast, probably the best we've had in Europe in all three family trips. We will need to hike hard to use the calories consumed today!
Robin: we hiked to a lookout point at a lighthouse dating back to 1400s. The climb was hot but the views both inland and along the coast were spectacular, a lot of the hiking was through arid pine forests with that California coast smell. There were steep pitches both up and down into little coves. Jane tried her hand at taking pictures and got some great pictures of this yellow butterflies with fluorescent green accents that were hard to catch! Julie has been forecasting bad weather from her iPhone weather service for practically the entire hiking trip. As yet we have had only an occasional overcast hour here or there that was enjoyed by all.
We ended in the town of Begur with the last km of hiking along the highway. The town has a fortress dating back to the 1600-1700s when pirates were a big problem along the costa brava! It also has a special history with Cuba due to the large amount of emigration to Cuba in the 1800s.
As Kat mentioned below the cactus were spectacular and at every turn outlined by beautiful blue backdrop of the Mediterranean. We met two painters fromCharleston, SC. One of them was doing a workshop in Tuscany. We got her contact info as she will be doing several costa brava paintings and we hope to buy one from her.
