August 7
I woke this morning to find that it had rained overnight. It was a very cool 22. I almost felt like I needed a jacket.
I realized before I left that I would need to get some cash for taxis today. I think a sizeable percentage of my actual out of pocket expenses have been on cabs.
I would not have had to prepurchase yesterday since the bus was not entirely full. On the other hand it probably gave me a better nights sleep knowing things were confirmed.
The trip was uneventful. The countryside is rolling hills and trees with the odd little community along the way. Generally speaking inter-city roads are usually poor. This one is quite good but the traffic was pretty light. Certainly not what you would expect between two cities both of which are over 2 million. Cars were steady but not like the highways out of Calgary. There were a few trucks but again lighter than expected. That might be a result of the road systems being so poor that air freight or locally produced are a necessity.
But the strangest thing was that the highway had speed bumps every 15 or 20 Kms. I had been warned about this so I knew what to expect but I have no idea as to the reasoning behind it.
Got here and checked in and went for lunch. It was a bit later than I would normally go so the selection was more limited. But still good.
It was the usual 32 in the afternoon but this evening was gorgeous. About 27 with a cool breeze. I liked it so much I went around the park twice. Figured I'd be sitting for the next couple of days and it will be the last time I ever do it so twice was warranted. Although I did get some argument from my feet.
And I even managed to find my way there and back without needing to consult my GPS even though I was coming from a completely different direction on streets I wasn't familiar with.
Tomorrow begins the journey home and the part I've been dreading from the day the flights were booked - an 11 hour layover in Sao Paulo. Give me an 11 hour layover in London and I'd be dancing in the aisles. It would be easy to catch the Tube into the city for the day. Not possible here. (My biased standard for a World Class City is one that has a Subway or Metro or equivalent from the airport to the city core. Which means Portland Oregon qualifies but Sao Paulo doesn't.)
So I may be carted off to the loony bin before my flight leaves at Midnight. It is not much of a airport and I will have to haul my large suitcase around all day. International flights can't be checked in until 2 hours before departure.
Aargh!

C I feel for you. Layovers are painful. Good luck! Can't wait to see you and hear all the stories when you get back.
