August 8
It was off to the Airport at 9 AM to begin a long day of sitting. The cabbie was a young kid - couldn't have had a license very long. But he did have an iPhone with a translation program so he asked if I wanted the air conditioning on. It was fairly windy at the time and still early enough that the temperature was pleasant so I didn't need it. But I thought it was nice of him to take the trouble to ask.
It has been an adventure. There have been challenges along the way but that is to be expected. Language has been a barrier but we've stumbled through.
I have enjoyed virtually everywhere I was although I must admit I struggle to find any redeeming qualities for the actual city of Manaus.
Every place was so different and the contrasts so great that it demonstrates the vastness and differences within the country itself. I've tried to reflect that as I went along.
And I only sampled. I didn't see Rio or Iguassu Falls or Salvador, the place the Brazilians themselves seem to favor for vacations.
But it always come down to the people themselves and for the most part they were welcoming and joyful. Cultural differences are something to embrace as they broaden our own understandings.
I am writing this part from the airport in Goiana. If my sanity isn't compromised, I'll add some other thoughts from Sao Paulo.
Addendum: The flight was 1/2 hour late out of Goiania which of course caused a great deal of anxiety, stress and worry as to whether I could still make my connecting flight.
