We had heard about a tribe called the Goanians living south of us, so we 3 intrepid Canadian adventurer's set out today to see if we could find this illusive group. We had heard they had been spotted in an area called Flamboyant Park.
But before we could set out we needed provisions, so we set out to find a Cafe. Apparently on Domingo (Sunday) virtually everything in central Goiana is closed. After much searching we did find one place that was open.
Once provisioned, we hired a local guide to take us to the area that this group has been reported to be living.
Using a primitive form of local transportation, called a taxi sem air conditiona, which roughly translated means "taxi without air conditioning" we set off - navigating the treacherous river of traffic.
Unfortunately, due to a misinterpretation our guide delivered us to an area called Flamboyant Mall. Since the park was only a couple of blocks away we figured we would be able to go the rest of the way on our own. Which we did.
What we discovered was a lush area filled with many unique plants, birds, small lakes and some of the illusive Goianians who seemed to be out enjoying the crisp winter air of 32 degrees. While exploring the area we also discovered a group of stragglers from the World Convention who were also out exploring the area. We stopped and chatted for awhile a shared a coconut water. This is a local drink found in little roadside stands. A whole coconut is taken, the top chopped off, and then the water inside is sipped through a straw.
The natives living in this area live mainly in tall structures called condos. These encircle the park and come in many different shapes and styles. Many of condos consist of two floors with large decks. There were many of these and we counted well over a dozen that were under construction and at least 25 stories high.
After exploring the park, we set off to the Mall, primarily to seek some shelter from the heat of the day. This mall was large, packed and as nice as any mall I've ever seen. Although prices here are less than Sao Paulo things are still expensive. This is not a place to buy much. I figure if I had brought four iPad's and sold them at a decent markup that was 200 or 300 Reais less than retail here I could have paid for this trip.
Tomorrow, I begin my adventures alone again.
