Happiness Is The Road
Hey, Welcome to day 16. I've been here over two weeks now, and this trip keeps getting better. I'm just getting used to the fact that I don't have to go to work for a very long time. I feel like I've retired and it's fantastic. Yallingup and the surrounding area is just beautiful. After brekky I headed over to Cape Naturaliste and the lighthouse. Over the next few days I'll be making my way down the coast to the other lighthouse at Cape Leeuwin. There is a Cape to Cape (lighthouse to lighthouse) walk that you can do but I'll just be dipping in and out of sections of it. The scenery round here is incredible. The weather today is perfect, about 22 degrees and great for walking. I put my walking boots on and first of all went on the trail to the whale watching area. Between about September and December is the best time of the year to see the Whales. There was a lovely couple from Melbourne at the platform when I got there. We had a chat and they told me that this was the first time they had been to this part of Australia and that they had driven across the Nullarbor Plain to get here. That is the dessert that spans the bottom half of the country between Western Australia and South Australia. I'll be tackling this road in about 6 weeks and heard from them about places to stay and the fruit checkpoint! You are not allowed to take fruit and veg into or out of Western Australia and they search all vehicles going in and out! They also told about their travels in the UK. Anyhow, they had been on the platform for a while and had seen the Whales moving in and out of the water but they were a long way out. I could only really make out the white spray in the water where they were and got a few very faint glimpses of what was apparently Whale. He lent me his binoculars for a while but didn't really see anything. Never mind, it didn't really matter as it was just nice anyhow to have a chat and admire the beautiful scenery. I eventually bid the Melbourne couple farewell and set out on the walking trail to Bunker Bay a few kilometres away. It was a great walk and I was constantly on the lookout for snakes and lizards, as you never know here! I really enjoyed the walk and it was worth the effort as Bunker Bay is beautiful. I was the only person there in what seemed like my own little paradise. I was slightly peeved when coming down to the bay as my camera battery gave up. No problem though, as I would drive there after and take the photos. The walk back to the lighthouse where the camper was parked was uneventful, lizard and snake wise. Got in the camper and then drove down to Bunker Bay and had my lunch there (butties made in the camper) and still had the place to myself. Drove further along to Meelup Beach after that and almost had this beach to myself as well. I read my book for a while. I've been wanting to catch up on my reading on this trip but up to now I've not had much chance as there's just been so much to see and do. I'm reading Charlotte Street by Danny Wallace. I love his work. This is his first novel and it's very very good, highly recommended 5 stars. You may know him from his other books such as Yes Man which was turned into a film starring Jim Carrey. After Meelup it was back to Yallingup feeling as if I'd had a walk. Must have walked about 10 k's today. I've also caught the sun a bit more today and I am turning a nice shade of brown (Don't worry mum I'm not burning and I will moisturise!!!) After that it was back to the site at Yallingup, I had a walk down the beach and watched the surfers again and then had sausages for tea again BBQ'd just perfectly. It's Halloween tonight but you wouldn't know it here apart from a couple of kids on the camp site wearing masks. I'm looking forward to another day in paradise tomorrow. Nite nite possums.
