Happiness Is The Road
G'day Wombats! Got up early today as I'm leaving Freo and heading down to the south west and the country. I wanted to be on the road by 9 and ended up leaving at ten past. Just had to make a quick trip to Big W first to change some walking sandals I'd bought just 11 days ago because one of the buckles had come clean off. Got that done no problem and at the same time I bought a funky beach towel. Also got some beers from Woolworths Liquor whilst I was at the shopping centre. It was great to be leaving the city at last, but at the same time, I was a little bit sad to be leaving Perth, my favourite city in the world. No worries though I'll be back there in 11 months or so. I took the Kwinana Freeway out of Perth. This road has been extended since I was last there and now extends as far as Mandurah. The Freeway eventually turns into dual carriageway and it's all big roads for a while. Once I got away from Mandurah though there was hardly any traffic. I turned off the Highway to go to Preston Beach in the Yalgorup National Park. I drove all the way to the beach and saw only about one car. Got to the beach and the car park was empty apart from one car that was just leaving. I wandered onto the beach and had the whole place to myself! You could just see miles of completely empty and white sandy beach in each direction. It was incredible. The Indian Ocean sure is beautiful. From there I went back to the Highway and made another stop a bit further down at Myalup. Again I had the whole beach to myself! Hit the road again and headed down the Bunbury Highway and along the coast to Australind and Bunbury before going further along to Busselton. I stopped here at the sea front and made myself a cheese butty for lunch from the camper. It's great being able to get your own lunch on the road like this! I had stopped near the Busselton Jetty and I could see this mammoth pier stretching out into the sea as far as you could see! I paid my 2 dollars and had a walk to the end of it. It took just over 20 minutes to get to the very end! The pier extends 1.8 kilometres into the stunning Geographe Bay. It is heritage listed and is the longest timber piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. It has a little passenger train on it which runs nearly to the very end. Louis would absolutely love it. Check out the photos. On the way back down the pier there was a board with a poem on it called Pact which I really love.
PACT
This pact between
solid land
and shifting water
sings a simple pledge
that we can venture out
into a more capricious element
and survive
without wings
without gills or fins
the old jetty
lists inside the new one
a creature shedding its skin
wears its scars
as a sailor wears
swallows,hearts,anchors
we walk its length
to an extremity
of winds and bird cries, sunken bells
something calls our names
as surely as the moon bids tides
and we answer
one foot in front of the other
shape-shifting into an inter-element
where all is still and still all moves
I absolutely love that. It resonates something with me about this journey that I'm on, not only a physical journey and adventure but a spiritual journey where anything is possible and where the universe weaves her magic and shifts her energies. The possibilities in this world are endless. You just have to be free and open minded and let the magic flow.
After Busselton it was back on the road and to my destination today, Yallingup. It took about half an hour from Busselton to get there. Just before I got there I got a glimpse of the Indian Ocean shimmering and then took a sharp corner in the road ...... and then before me was paradise. This place is breathtakingly beautiful. It is simply stunning. The rugged coast, the white sand, the turquoise sea, the big rolling surf, it's beautiful. Yallingup is aboriginal for place of love and you can see why. I wish Jay was here with me. I found my camp site no problems, Yallingup Beach Holiday Park. I was going to stay two nights but upon seeing this place I booked in for three. The camp site is good, grassy sites, good amenities and a BBQ close by. I went for an explore and had a walk down the beach and watched the surfers. This seems to be pretty extreme surfing here as the breaks are massive. There's even a warning that the beaches and surf are dangerous and that extreme care should be taken. There's even a warning that spinal injuries have occurred on this beach. It felt quite "Home & Away" on this beach. I took my sausages over to the BBQ to cook them tonight. They have gas BBQs here and they heat up pretty quickly. Had a beer whilst waiting for my sausage to sizzle and had a lovely sausage, potato and salad tea. Bliss.
Okay let's do a mileage or kilometerage count now. Picking van up till leaving Freo 187k's, Leaving Freo to Yallingup 280k's. So that's 467k's up to now.
Nite nite my lovely Wombat followers, till next time.
