The aim today is to do all my last minute grocery shopping for Rapanui and at the same time go and climb San Cristobal hill seen as I missed doing it yesterday. After some organizing and stuffing around I headed to the city (over an hour on the bus) making it to downtown by just before midday. I headed straight for San Cristobal hill in order to climb it before the heat of the day got too intense; unfortunately the strike was still on and the whole park was closed. I wondered around the streets and residential area surrounding the park hoping that I might find a secret entrance where I could gain access to the hill but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Not to waste time I made my way to the huge outdoor markets to stock up on supplies for Rapanui. As I arrived early in the morning the market was in full swing and there were people everywhere buying, bartering, eating and stammering about. I picked up some dehydrated soy mince, nuts, Raisens, banana chips, tinned sardines/tuna, mixed vegetables, tea and a number of other bits and pieces. I guess my thinking is better to take too much food then not enough to Rapanui - the less food I buy on the island the easier the effect on my wallet will be. I walked through the central part of the market where all the small and cheap resteraunts were offering the local dishes for lunch; things like Seafood plates, chicken, hotdogs and the very unique Pastel de Choclo. Pastel de Choclo is a pie made with chicken, Olives, egg and the filling and topping is made from ground up corn (Choclo) - the thing is ginormous and costs about $6: when I come back to Santiago I will for sure be trying this national dish. I decided to then head for downtown and see if I could find a photo printing place as I wanted to print Kelly and Vira a nice photo of us all, unfortunately I couldn't get my iPhone to work at any of the shops and so I gave up on the idea for now. I had been busting to go to the toilet for about 3 hours and after asking repeatedly and searching out every crack and crevasse I had to pay to take a leak - which to me is criminal (I could pee in a bucket) and they charge me 60c. I took the Metro and then a bus back to Kelly and Viras; they hadn't arrived back yet so I took the time to organize some of my things. When they arrived home they had with them steaks, sausages and various salads and vegetables - it was time for my first Chilean BBQ. Using this cool little hot plate that sat on top of the washing machine Vira cooked up an absolute feast of BBQ zuchini, onion, peppers, spicy/smoked sausages and steak - whilst Kelly made a corn, tomato, lettuce and pepper salad. I decided to cook up some of the soy mince I had brought earlier in the day but really had no idea how to so I just soaked in hot water and then fried with garlic and onion. The meal was a real treat and the sausages were to die for, the soy mince I made wasn't that amazing but hopefully I can learn how to cook it properly. After thanking both Kelly and Vira and organizing my return I said goodnight/goodbye and then went about packing my bags, something that ended up taking me well passed midnight.
