Today I wanted to check out some hiking stores and I also needed to prepare dinner for Kelly & Vira. In the morning I sat down with Yergus and he gave me a map and a list of places I have to visit in the South of Chile. I decided to cook the dinner in the morning so I could have the rest of the afternoon in the city. I made my trusty and always enjoyed Tortilla Australianus and as there was an oven I used that to bake it as opposed to sly frying it; I also made a bit of a crunchy salad with lettuce, tomato, onions, strawberries, nuts and avocado. When saying goodby to Yergus he gave me some bits and pieces of first-aide equipment that he didn't want to take home on the plane with him. I then started my big 8km walk to one of the outer provinces of the city where I could draw money out and visit the hiking stores. The weather was beautiful and there was a nice bike path I was able to follow all the way, stopping at small fruit and vegetable places all along the way. After a good couple of hours I came to the mall and what a mall it was - I was completely knackered from the heat and the walk but I had hiking equipment to check out. Looking at the various hiking stores it became quite apparent I was in to spend a large chunk of money decking myself out with gear- Doite the local Chilean company was by far the best and cheapest option. After checking out all the hiking stores I then went to the big supermarket in the mall called Jumbo; I mainly just wondered around comparing prices and working out what I would take to Rapanui. I found some soya mince which I am thinking might be useful when camping in Patagonia so I picked up a pack. As I was leaving the mall I came across an old man selling avocados - 10 small ones for $2 - incredibly cheap for Chile so I brought a bag and will probably take most of them to Rapanui with me. The walk home was long and exhausting but it was really nice to see lots of active people riding and walking home from work - kind of like Perth (beautiful parks and paths to encourage active lifestyles). I arrived back at Kelly and Viras around 7:30pm and the sun was still high in the sky (sun sets about 9pm here), they had just brought a little rabbit and I was going to help them setup a cage for the little guy. My dinner was well received and another delicious bottle of red was brought out to accompany the wine. I had a really interesting chat with Vira and she leant me some camping gear for my trip on Rapanui. Both Vira and Kelly headed to bed early as they had to be at airport at 6am so I sat around researching camping equipment and finishing of my red wine.
