Today the aim is to start looking and buying some of the things I need for Torres del Paine. After a late breakfast I headed to the mall to check out all the hiking equipment and food supplies. I found lots of good stuff at reasonable prices but to be honest am still a bit lost as to what I am going to buy and what I will rent. I headed back to the house around lunchtime and made a quick lunch before making my way to Zona Franca - the famous tax free zone here in Punta Arenas. This area had everything you can imagine and I found about 6 stores selling camping goods from very cheap crappy stuff to decent moderately priced stuff. I literally spent 5 hours wondering around lost and came out more confused then when I went in. The walk back to the house was incredibly cold and made me realize that I can't take my trip to Patagonia lightly and that I must prepare for the worst of weather. At 9pm a guy I had contacted through a second hand classifieds site came around with some used jackets and polars and I ended up buying a jacket and a pluma vest off of him for about $40 - a real bargain here as new the jackets are well over $100. The guys went out tonight so I took the time to do a little research and figure out exactly what I will do with buying the equipment for my hike.
