Jennifer's Trip
Hey hey hey!
Well my time here is almsot at an end, can you believe it! After almsot elevn weeks it is about time for my to board the plane back to the 'Deen. This week is all a bit mad, my school wants to get me a Ghanaian outfit, so I had to pick material and get measured for it. I am also having to decide what stuff I am leaving here. Some of my clothes are so wrecked that if I took them home they probably would not get worn again, so they're staying here! Plus my bag was soooo heavy coming here, I need to get rid of some stuff!
The last week or so has been good. I stayed in Bebu with one of the other volunteers on Friday night, and after about half an hour of arrving the power went off. Georgina rerassured us that it would be back within half an hour of coming on, but it didn't. In fact it onyl came back yesterday! Now when the power goes, so does the water because there is no electricity to pump the water. Now this makes things interesting, when the toilet doesn't flush, and there are stomach issues (to put it politely) now luckily we didn't have any problems there. Unfortunatley the other thing that is necessary is a bucket shower, which is really not nice - I can't wait to have a shower and know that the water is very unlikely to go off when I still have shampoo in my hair.
On Saturday we went to Kumasi Fort which is a milirary museum. There is lots of weapons and other memorabilia from the colonial times right up to the present day. It was quite interesting (which means dad you would have found it fascinating!).
I spent all day Sunday at the hospital, as Birte had a headache and a slight fever, and that usually means malaria, but luckily this time it didn't. The blood test took FIVE hours, when it should only take half and hour. In Ghana, time is almost meaningless, most Ghanains don't even wear a watch.
This week is just being spent getting ready to go. It feels nioce to know I am going home, but also a bit sad. When I think about it it doesn't feel like I have been here for so long, but when I look at my diary it feels like such a long time since I arrived. I am not sure the kids really understand I am leaving, but one of the teachers said that usually when the volunteers leave the kids are sad and some even cry! I hope they don't because if they cry, I think I will too!
I am going to Accra on Saturday before my flight home on Monday night. This, of course, means I will be spending my 23rd birthday on a bus! Never mind, I am sure it will be memorable enough. Knowing my luck, the bus will break down or something.
Well, the 'Ghana Diaries' are noe at an end. I don't think I will get another chance to go on the internet before I leave. So I will definatley see you all soon!
I get home, to Aberdeen at about 11 on Tuesday!
