They call the West Coast the WET Coast for obvious reasons. Franz Joseph, where I spent a couple of nights, gets an average of 5 meters of rain annually.
They probably got a meter of that rain during the two days I was there. Rain, wind, greyness, and cold. This is NOT my idea of a nice day for a ride. To be honest, the rain is really starting to dampen my spirits! I don't know if I can handle cycling day after day after day in the rain; my optimism is running dry.
Also, the west coast terrain is quiet difficult (but damn gorgeous) and there are extremely long distances in between places so I would likely have to do some solo freedom camping. Perhaps I'm too much of a princess but this situation is not sounding very enticing to me. So, I bought myself a bus ticket and down the west coast I went! :)
Such a great decision.
I got off in Wanaka. The weather was stunning and Wanaka is absolutely magically beautiful. I went for a ride around the lake just as the sun was setting and even though the air was cold I felt a warmth within. I was happy.
I got up early the next morning because I had a reservation to go skydiving. But to my surprise (not!) it was cancelled due to the weather - rain, surprise surprise.
I didn't want to wait around another day or two for the weather to clear. Even though I adore Wanaka, there is lots of New Zealand to see and I was just too antsy to get back on my bike again.
Maybe a Skydiving in Queenstown?!?
