Jim, the truck driver that I met in Atiamuri and stayed with in Napier connected me with family he has in Waipukarau. I would otherwise have probably camped somewhere. It's a good thing that I didn't.
I had a lovely evening with Tracey, Shawn and their adorable three year old son who amazingly never had training wheels on his bicycle but went straight onto two wheels.
They showed me around their lovely town, shared a beautiful meal with me, picked me up from swimming and saw me off in an ambulance all before 11pm.
The reason I was called off in an ambulance was for a similar reason I went off in one not 3 months ago. I was back in Yellowknife the first time and thought it was a once in a lifetime experience. Not so.
The best way to describe the pain is that it feels like I'm having a heart attack. The only difference is that my heart is absolutely fine - very lucky for me!!! They don't know why I get this feeling but it happens very suddenly and the pain is wrenching and intolerable. The difference this time is that my entire left arm and hand went numb and started tingling and shaking. An ambulance was called.
My fear, since weren't not sure why this happens is that it will happen while I am cycling. They think it may be an esophageal spasm or stem from a stomach problem of some sort. If it happens again they gave me some meds to take for the pain and I am left to wait it out. Better said than done I say. The worst of it is over in 15 minutes. I'm fully back to myself in a couple of days.
The worst (or best) part is that I had to call this lovely family who I just met and ask them to pick me up - a half hour drive away at 2:30 in the morning. UGH! Luckily they were super sweet and happy to help. In fact they apologized to ME for not accompanying me in the ambulance!! That's how nice these people are. As bad as I felt about it I was feeling equally as grateful that I wasn't in a tent all by myself that night and that the most easy going and accommodating people were there to help.
In fact, Tracey's parents hosted me on their cattle farm the following night.
Somebody's pushing some positive energy my way. Thanks for that.

Auntie S You have no idea how comforting it is to know that you are being looked after when family is soooo far away. I love you and these blogs.......they are such a good read. Glad you and the locals are taking care of yourself.
Z GAH. I can't believe it happened again!!!!! So scary. Always sending positive energy your way. Always.
