80+kms. What a great day; so much better than the day before, even though it seems I've brought the cold Canadian weather with me!
You know what I feel like when I cycle through such beautiful scenery that I'm so taken aback it makes me say "WOW!!" aloud?
I feel like I'm a character in a Disney movie; that life is so great I must have somehow surpassed reality and entered a picturesque faireytale. Sometimes I'm so overwhelmed I immediately break out in Disney songs like "hakuna matata" - then realize I'm not in Africa and need to either write an original or a new version to better fit the situation.
Perhaps a little something more like this (*clearing throat*)...
"It means no worries, for the rest of your "k"s (meaning kilometers),
Yeah your legs are strong,
you're movin' along....
Cycle! New Zealand!
Cycle! New Zealand!"
Maybe the fresh air is getting to me (or the ridiculous amount of chocolate I'm consuming - the bars here are MASSIVE :) but I'm having a great time living the dream. Who else do you know experiences Disney land without going to Florida?
... just what I thought.
Cycling is fantastic because it challenges you and rewards you every step of the way (or should I say every push of the pedal).
My laughs far outnumber my cries; for every struggle there are two rewards; every moment of loneliness is drowned by the excitement of five new friends; and you experience everything at all times with all five senses.
Sight- no sight is more stunning than a beautiful and unexpected view at the top of a hard climb.
Smell- Everything from the crispness of the air to the dung from a hundred cows meeting you at a fence - mooooOOOOoooooo!!!!!!
Sound- birds, lambs and sheep, cows, rivers, trains, traffic, the woosh of your tires on the road, rain, silence, your own thoughts (all the problems of the world can be solved on the seat of a bicycle, I swear it)
Touch- The wind against your skin, raindrops pouring down your face, the warmth of the sun (I've already managed to get a burn - the ozone is thinner here), or the soft scratches on your legs and arms from lying in a bed of green grass.
Taste- Every bite of food tastes better when you need it and not just want it. I don't usually get cravings but when I'm cycling I almost always know what I want (ex: the fat in a handful of nuts, the sugar in dried fruit or candy, the carbs in a sandwich, the protein in fish, etc...). It's also a great excuse to eat as much CHOCOLATE as you want!! ;)
Up next: Rugby in Rotorua.
