It turns out that we drove 661 miles yesterday after stopping in Blue Heron service plaza. The drive was long but we took plenty of rest stops and were rewarded with a great place to stop for the night and a shorter drive today. We were on the road about 16 hrs. and 5 of them were in breaks.
We had an easy 466 miles today. We slept in until 8, (even though Kati reminded us that is not sleeping in). After breakfast and showers we headed out about 9:30. We drove about 200 miles and stopped for gas and lunch just east of Sioux Falls.
We decided to pull into a rest area to switch drivers and we ran into a beautiful sight. Right in front of us was a sculpture of Sacagawea named Dignity in a memorial site dedicated to her and the Lewis and Clark Expedition overlooking the river valley. How fortunate.
We had to change plans since we do not have a car with us. Originally we were going to spend two nights in Badlands National Park, but I am now grateful I did not make reservations since driving the RV through the park is not going to work. So on to plan B. We will spend the night here, but drive away in the morning.
We arrived at the park and bought our National Park pass. Drove in through the winding steep downhill road (which I may say I handled the RV like a boss) to the campground office to find all walk in sites were taken. We booked a spot in their sister campground right before the entrance of the park and then had dinner at the lodge restaurant.
The campground is not great, but with full hookups it serves its purpose for one night. Tomorrow we will sightsee on our way to Rapid City. We will make the drive back to this park once we have the rental car.
