Almost 50 miles today. It was a mixed day with a relatively easy morning, mostly rolling hills, strenuous enough to get the old heart rate up but not enough to turn my legs to jello, that would come later in the day. Leaving Brookings I felt fine: a warm bed, hot shower,a full breakfast and free fresh coffee and muffins can do that for me :) Although it was chilly starting out I learned from yesterday and dressed more warmly and was a bit more comfortable. We got to Crescent City about 10:30 both of us hungry and feeling the effects of the cold winds blowing off the ocean. After a full serving of bacon and eggs and hash browns at Denny's we prepared ourselves for the first major climb of the day. It was a cruel mountain - we managed 5 miles in 52 minutes! That is a darn slow, long grunt up ... We stopped to rest our jello legs halfway up and then walked/ rode for the rest of the ascent. The ride down wasn't much fun either as there was no shoulder and lots of traffic and a bloody cold wind! It was a pity really because we were riding through beautiful redwood forests with no chance to enjoy the scenery - just focused on getting of that section of road.
We are camping in Klamath tonight at the Mystic Forest Camp Ground and will be heading for Eureka tomorrow.
BTW the cover picture is that of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox our welcoming party as we entered Klamath.
