49.6 miles today but it felt much longer. We woke up at camp very early, everything was cold and damp and I never felt warm the rest of the day, except when climbing another hill.
The first 20 miles or so were lovely, along the coast, spectacular views, lots of photo stops. We stopped in Gold Beach for coffee and then began an immediate climb over Cape Sebastian- 3 slow miles up and up and up. I stopped to shed my jacket as the sweat was adding to my discomfort, to my regret because the ride down the other side was bone chilling cold! The sun was not very strong today and the winds were chilly.
Most of the day we were riding along the rocky shore, miles and miles of desolate beach- beautiful and isolated. We soon got used to the scenery and did not stop at every viewpoint along the way as one rocky beach began to look like every other rocky beach. How many photos of sand dunes, rock formations and ocean waves does one need? I have uploaded a few to give you a sample of our day.
The road was quite interesting- major climbs then fast runs down only to begin another climb. After about the fourth steepish hill I had quite enough of it. The hardest part of the day was not only the many hills but the cold winds, then fog began to roll in after lunch adding to the chill and dampness.
Because our camping gear was still damp from this morning's heavy dew and because we were both tired and chilled we made a decision to find a cheap motel in Brookings rather than camp in a damp, cold and foggy campground. A decision I'm glad we made as I sit in the warm motel lobby with a fresh coffee in my hand updating this blog.
