67.4 miles today. Started with a 3 mile long climb out of Cape Outlook State Park to rejoin Hwy 101. Rest stop and coffee at Cape Kiwanda with WiFi! We passed by amazing sand dunes in a forest and missed getting photos as we were passed the best photo spots before we realized that that was the best photo spot and neither of us were keen to go back.
It was a tough day with three major climbs, all long and steep. It was one of those days when I was beginning to question my sanity in agreeing to do this tour. What was I thinking!? But once the worst of the hills was done there was a wonderful sense of accomplishment as we cruised alongside sand dunes and beaches with the freshness of the cooling ocean breeze reenergizing me for the next challenge.
And the next challenge wasn't far off - getting over the bridge in Florence. We followed the bike route signs only to fine road construction had closed off access to the bridge. The workers would not let us walk through and we had to back track over a confusing trail to find Hwy 101 again. The southbound sidewalk was closed, traffic was crazy so we were hesitant to ride across the bridge as there was no shoulder. So we had to cross 4 lanes of traffic with no crosswalk or controlled intersection in sight to be able to cross over and walk our bikes over the bridge. All very nerve wracking! Once over the bridge we had to cycle a ways on the wrong side of the road before we had an opportunity to cross over safely.
Once over the bridge our campground was just a mile or so ahead, smooth sailing from then on.
