We have a weekend minstay at Sorrento exploring the surrounding areas. We departed Rome at 7:30am by bus and headed along the highway towards Naples. After an hour and a half of driving we made a pit stop at a coffee shop/mini supermarket and wow do they know how to charge! We continued until we reached Naples and the bus took us through the area with the tour guide commentary in English then Spanish then Japanese.... got a little bit over the three translations every time we saw something new haha. We found Naples to be an odd town compared to Rome. It was very dirty and garbage was everywhere. It didn't have the same rustic feel as Rome, it felt run down and a bit ghetto. But hey, we are here to explore, the good and the not so good, and you don't know until you see it for yourself. We then continued on until we reached a small coral and pearl store. There was a man inside who you could watch make these amazing little carved pieces out of coral. It was real and we were hearded towards the jewellery for sale and let me tell you I don't have 200 Euro to splurge on a small ring. I also saw a small pair of earrings on display for 6,000 Euro. Jaw drop! It was finally time for lunch when we were closer to Pompeii. There we ate a three course lunch which included spaghetti, meat and veg and a pastry with custard inside. It was very filling and Matty (who had two helpings of spaghetti which were not small portions) didn't realise we then had a two hour walking tour of the city of Pompeii ruins.
The city of Pompeii ruins was something I was specifically looking forward to and it did not disappoint. The two hour walk through the ruins was like going back in time. I've always enjoyed history and our tour guide was of course very good. I won't go on about the Pompeii tour as the photos will capture in fewer words what I'd like to explain. It was awesome and the views from the top down to Naples were gorgeous. Tomorrow we go onto more of Sorrento and to the Isle of Capri.
