We arrived in Lucca at 4pm which is a much smaller town, quiet and less hussle bussle. It has over 100 churches! This time we were split up into groups of four and were given apartments to live in which was a nice change from the tiny hotel rooms. As usual, our tour guide spent an hour or so taking us all through the town so we could get our bearings. Dinner again was great however if you ever order a calzone in Italy it is literally the size of a large dinner plate; wish I knew that :) Another walk through the streets back to our apartments and an early night to bed.
The next day was a big one! We met outside a rent-a-bike store at 9am, given a bike and rode through the town and out to the countryside. This was the longest bike ride I've ever done lol it was four hours but it was an experience riding through the Italian countryside. I also hadn't ridden a bike in at least a decade, but as they say, once you've learnt you never forget. I'm going to be so fit after six weeks of walking, walking and walking with the occasional bike and train ride. We arrived back in town at 1pm and then Matty and I quickly found a small cafe and had toasted panini followed by gelato. We were starving after our ride :) We went back to the apartment for a nap haha first one yet but needed to restore our energy. When we woke up, our tour guide had begun to prepare dinner for our group (his treat) so of course we helped and time rolled around to 8:30pm quickly. Everyone arrived, food was eaten, alcohol flowed and bedtime was 1am.
We woke the next morning at 7am (I was stuffed), dragged ourselves out to breakfast and at 9am went to watch parachuters and the start of the World Championship Cycling races in Lucca. It is a big event here for a small town. We then took the train to Pisa to see the leaning tower. It was extremely busy and so many people taking the famous "I'm holding up Pisa" photo. It is a small town, quite poor and the only thing there to really be interested in is the main square with the markets, a church and the leaning tower of Pisa. Matty and I were there for a couple of hours, had lunch then took the train back to Lucca. Back in Lucca we window shopped (I wish I could buy - so many nice bags, clothes, perfumes etc.) ans sat down for a couple of hours and watched the world go by. Then back to the apartment where Matty cooked a quick dinner and an early bedtime.
