We finished off our time in Rome with a visit to the Villa Borghese gardens which are huge. We hired a little tandem bike and rode around for an hour to take in the scenery. We met up with our tour group at about 2pm and took a 1.5hr train to Florence.
Florence, what a wonderful city! We checked into our hotels (it was dinner time by now) and met up with our tour leader who took us to what I can only describe as a version of Subway Italian style - but 1,000 times better. Authentic, awesome tasting food. We grabbed ourselves a sandwich each and headed up to the Piazzale Michelangiolo (panoramic point) to take in the fantastic views of Florence. This however was a good test of fitness as there were about 100 steps to get to this point....I was b*****ed at the top to say the least but the views were definately worth it. We ate our sandwiches, took in the sights and then made our way back to our hotels. Bed time at this point is becoming midnight.
The next day we had to ourselves and we did guided tours of the Accademia Gallery where the real statue of David is held (impressive) and the Uffizi Gallery where works by Michaelangiolo, Leonardo, Donatello etc. were held. Finally got to see the real life famous Venus goddess of love in the pearl shell with the angels next to her. We would love to share photos however photography was strictly prohibited in both these galleries. A wander around the streets and it was back to the hotel to meet up with the group for dinner again. This time we were taken to a restaurant with a difference. Home made Italian cuisine was free, the only catch was your pay $5 for your first drink, $4 for your second, $3 for your third etc. and the food was buffet and as much as you could eat. Very cheap, great tasting meal. After this we took to the streets and got some gelato.... so good of course. Bed again, midnight.
Today is our last morning in Florence. I plan to go around the leather markets which look great, hopefully purchase a purse or handbag :) Then off on the train for 2hrs to Lucca.
