An early morning on the train to the Cinque Terre area where we were definately not expecting what was about to happen! I should have done more research on the area haha silly me. The area has five villages each with a train and walking tracks inbetween them. We were told we were going to walk from Corniglia to Venezza as it was the most beautiful track to walk along with outstanding views of the area. Due to landslides last year, the first two tracks were closed so we walked from the third to the fourth village. The views were spectacular as the photos will prove however the walk was a killer (three days later my knees are still shot from stepping down hundreds of stairs). It was a 4km walk which took 2 hours so you could only imagine the man made stone stairs of all shapes, heights and sizes going up hundreds at a time and coming down in the hundreds. We were both begging for mercy by the end of that walk! If you did the entire five villages along the cliff face track it would take you 6 - 8hrs. It isn't the distance that takes a long time to complete if it were flat, it's those impractical stairs which go up, down and all over the place. Anyways, we eventually walked into the small village and had gelato to recharge ourselves. Some of the group decided to do the next 2hr walking track (insane) however Matt and I took the train to the next village, Monterosso. We had lunch there (Matt prawns and myself fries and salad) by the beachside. It was a beautiful place (they all are in their own way) with many tourists and locals coming to bathe in the sun on the grey sandy beach lol we both appreciate Australian fine white sand much more now. After lunch we took the train back to La Spezia and had a much needed nap before dinner. The group celebrated a member's birthday so we had dinner at an underground restaurant (it literally looked like an old bunker) and the food was absolutely devine (and cheap!). Matt had a seafood lasagne and I had roast pork with potatoes. The Italians have a way of making the simple food taste like fine dining. The best meals we've had so far and for only $28 Euro which is about $35 Aussie dollars for the both of us! By the time we'd eaten and celebrated we were in bed around midnight.
