We've been having fun on the Savannah Way, the road that runs from Cairns to Broome. Especially on the sections where there is only one lane-width of tar, soft dirt edges either side, and a 50 metre road train bearing down on you at 100 miles an hour... but that's another story.
We squeezed in another free camp after leaving Undara (we remembered to camp right up the back this time, furthest away from the road), and then spent a night at Leichhardt Lagoon, which was a lovely spot, as the name suggests, on a lagoon.
Hit the coastal town of Karumba on Saturday afternoon, to find the place overrun with grey nomads with tinnies. It is a fishing mecca up here, people stay for months at a time at the van parks here, stocking their freezers with fish.
Not wanting to miss the action, we signed up for a half day fishing charter on Monday and hit the water. After a promising start, where we both caught a spotted mackerel each, the fishing died off, and we ended up only netting 9 fish between 10 of us on board. The guide said that the day before, they'd caught 80 fish. "You should've been here yesterday" - the story of our fishing lives! We got to take the fish home, so we've got a few meals out of it, can't complain.
After dinner that night, we went fishing with our neighbours (who were among the handful of non-grey nomads in this caravan park)down at the boat ramp. All sorts of things were swimming past, Lee hooked a few different types of fish, none of them keepers, but we had fun. Lea swore she saw a croc floating past, but Lee reckons it was a piece of rubbish in the water. Jury's still out on that one.
The sunsets up here are amazing, it is the thing to do to go down the beach and watch the sun sink over the Gulf. It's strange to watch the sunset over the water, something we'll get used to on the west coast, no doubt.
