We left Chillagoe, very impressed with the place. So much to do for such a small town.
Spent a night in Atherton as we thought we should visit the Tablelands' namesake. Timely visit, being in a place with TV, as we got to watch the Wallabies beat New Zealand (finally) in the Bledisloe Cup at the local pub. Hoorah! God bless Stirling Mortlock.
Checked out the historic Chinatown the next day - during the gold rush, and afterwards, there was a large Chinese population in the Tablelands - all that remains now is the Hou Wang Temple. The artefacts in the temple, and the stories of what went on in those days, were quite remarkable.
After another chilly night we decided we needed to warm up so legged it to a place called Innot Hot Springs. The creek there is a natural hot spring, but for those less brave, the caravan park pumps it into a series of pools, to prevent you burning your bum by jumping in at the wrong spot in the creek. Or conversely, freezing, again by incorrect selection. Had a lovely afternoon/evening wallowing around in the pools, but lingered a little too long - it was dark by the time we got out, and rather chilly.
The steam rising from the creek the next morning was so thick you couldn't see the creek at first. It was tempting to jump back into the pools and have another soak, but it was time to hit the road again.
