Sick of dawdling in the mornings and being the last to leave a campsite, we got up early, packed up camp and hit the road before 9.30am - a record for us!
Drove up through Coen, and got our free Cape York information pack (Lea loves tourist brochures), before driving on up to the Archer River Roadhouse. The roads have been fantastic so far, we haven't needed 4WD at all, and they are as smooth as a highway in most sections. A few corrugations every now and then to shake us up, and remind us that we're on a dirt road!
Had lunch at the roadhouse and got chatting to the bloke next to us Chris - a 50-something man from the Central Coast, who is CYCLING up to Cape York from Lakeland, with his 72 YEAR OLD mate. Unassisted! No support vehicle! What the?!
After lunch we set up camp on the banks of the Archer River - a fantastic spot. It was stinking hot by mid-arvo, so we went for a swim in the river (Lea had thought ahead today and already checked with the roadhouse staff re the croc situation). Sitting down after our dip, and who should drive past but Kerrie and Adam! Waved them down and they pulled up, and ended up staying for the night. We had a lovely afternoon swimming, and Chris the crazy cyclist came down to join us for a chat - what an amazing guy. He cycles 50-80km a day on dirt roads, pushing his bike when it gets too sandy, or when he has to do a creek crossing.
Started up the campfire, then Adam pulled out his guitar and played us some half-songs (apparently he loses interest in a song after the 1st chorus). Cooked dinner and checked out Kerrie and Adam's photos from their trip, it was very inspiring!
