Left Cairns and headed north, feeling a bit excited as this was the start of our Cape adventure.
Drove up to Port Douglas and had a look around, then up to the car ferry to cross the Daintree River. Drove up through the rainforest, and, lo and behold, it rained! Amazing. Set up camp at Noah Beach, just south of Cape Tribulation, and fell asleep listening to the rain. And woke up again in the middle of the night listening to the rain...
Next day we were up early, eager to tackle the road ahead. Stopped off and had a look at the beach at Cape Trib, and bought a $5 map for the Bloomfield Track which would take us up to almost Cooktown. Turned out to be a good investment, as the road was pretty hairy in places! We did our first creek crossing for the trip, and then our second, and our third, and our fourth. We couldn't decide which made us novice off-roaders more nervous, the creek crossings, or the 33% inclines on wet roads! Or perhaps it was the 33% decline on a wet dirt road with a hairpin bend thrown in for good measure?
Finally made it to the Lions Den Hotel at Helensvale, where we gladly set up camp on the back lawn, and had a beer to celebrate our success at getting this far. Went up that night to the bar, where we met a young couple, Kerrie and Adam, who are at the end of their 13 month trip around Oz. Spent the night chatting, and getting some tips on good places to go! They're on their way up to Cape York too, so we'll probably be seeing them a few times, no doubt.
