The Mauri overnight stay was quite tacky to be honest. Nothing genuine about it, basically performed a traditional dance and sang a few tunes, other than that, self-promoted the fact that they had auditioned for New Zealand's got talent and had over 5 million views on YouTube! Couldn't believe it!! Crowded, noisy, busy....
I like the Maori principles of respecting elders; honouring your family; keeping the peace; welcoming friends and community.
Sleeping in the Maori gathering place was again, a unique experience. 40 people all on foam mattresses, from all over the world under one roof! Some people were loud at night-a bit obnoxious by not being respectful of the rest. Alas, no regrets-just interesting...
Left the Mauri and stopped in Rotorua for a couple of hours. Went on a self-guided geo-thermal walk and soaked my feet in a mud bath.
On to Taupo. A modern, clean town. My 2nd favorite place so far (besides Paihia and Cape Reinga):) I was energized being here-tons of patios, cafes, restaurants, shops. The lake is aqua clear blue with a view of the mountain in the background-kind of reminded me of Kelowna in B.C, but more lush. Went out for a walk, picked up sushi and sat by the lake for dinner.
The group had some drinks at the hostel, played pool-bed early. Good night....
Another neat saying on a sign post:
Don't kill the dream-execute it....
