Left Raglan at 8 am-almost missed the bus since we had offered to switch to a different hostel at the last minute which was overlooking the coast and we had to hike straight down the path. Bus driver (spoon) seemed ticked:(
Loved the hostel-ecofriendly. Recycled everything and had yoga (if you wanted); organic cafe; grew own herbs and vegetables on the premises:)
The sunset boat cruise was nice. Had freshly caught fish (&chips). The boat only went 10km/hr-barely got any wind blowing through the hair!! Nice to be out on the water in the evening....peaceful.
Stopped in Waitomo and hiked into 'spiroketes' caves-neat formations of calcium deposits, water. Saw glow worms which are basically larvae which trap other insects to feed in these caves-they hang from the roof and in the dark, glow (obviously)!
Onwards to the Maori culture centre overnight....more to come about this!! For now, here are some interesting facts/pronounciations from NZ:
Taupo=Toe paw
Moos Baahs Oinks (name of a restaurant in town)
Kia Ora (Key-Ora)=hello in Maori Marae=more eye; traditional Maori gathering place
Okere Falls-went there
Black swans-all over
40 million sheep in the country
50-60 million cows (Fonterra)
Huka Falls near Taupo-went there
Lake Taupo is a volcanic crater size of Singapore
