We went on our Cape Tribulation tour today, unfortunately we didn't think it was worth it but at least it got us out doing something. It was a nice coastal drive to Port Douglas then we had to hang around for thirty five minutes. On the way down there I realised I had forgotten my bikini, I thought I would have been able to buy one there but we left so early none of the shops were open yet! That meant no swimming for me today. Some people say "Port Douglas is a really nice town, you should definitely go there!" but we thought it was a bit boring. All we did was sit in a coffee shop.
We left Port Douglas at 9:30am and carried on driving to Mossman Gorge, there our guide took us on an hour rainforest walk. It was ok, some nice scenery and a good view of the river but to honest we saw a lot nicer stuff in the outback. I think we have been spoilt lol.
At 11am we carried on driving to Alexandria look out just for a quick photo, then crossed the river on a barge and into Cape Tribulation. We walked down, seeing a few big spiders in their webs then sat and had our lunch on the beach away from everyone else. It was a nice beach but too cold to swim so it made no difference that I forgot my bikini. I took some photos then wrote happy birthday to my sister Natalie in the sand, I think it looked really good but I ended up with soaking wet clothes lol. As they started to dry the sand looked like glitter and wouldn't come off, then my clothes went crispy from the salt! It was worth it though lol.
We walked back up to the coach and left at 1:50pm, so we had just over an hour on the beach. We stopped on the road on the drive back to where the rainforest literally met the reef, the driver was very excited about it so we all showed enthusiasm and took photos. We didn't keep any though because it just looked like a bunch of trees. There were only a few glimpses of the sea which didn't show up on camera.
The best part of the tour was at Daintree River where we went on a wildlife cruise for one hour. It left at 3pm and was actually really good! We got to see loads of baby crocodiles, some were a year old and others only a few months so they were really small, only about a foot long. We had never seen babies in the wild before, some of the babies were sitting in the trees which was a bit strange to see, we also got to see one swimming which was really cool. She was right next to the boat, Chris wanted to grab her but her bite would still do a lot of damage and mummy would have come after him!!!
Our guide warned us about a surprise further up the river, he said it wasn't for the weak stomached. Suddenly the surprise hit us, right in the nose! It was the smell of a rotting animal carcass! It was disgusting, we all had to hold our noses to avoid vomiting! The guide said it had been there in the hot sun for a good few days, thank god we didn't actually have to see it! One of the larger crocs we saw had white stuff all around his nose, the guide said it was the fat from the dead animal he had been feeding on!!
We saw a few big crocs but no massive ones like in Darwin, the guide said the size always depends on the location. To be honest I think we were more interested in the babies this time!
The cruise finished and we got back on the bus towards Cairns. We stopped at Rex's lookout for a photo, then finally arrived in Cairns at 6pm. To be honest we didn't think it was a great trip. It was a lot of driving and nothing really special to see. I think if we hadn't been to a rain forest or seen crocodiles in the wild before then it would have been more exciting for us. Ah well we shouldn't really complain, this was the tour Chris managed to get for free after telling a cheeky lie about the price when we booked it back in Byron Bay lol.
Back in our hostel we decided to cook our own dinner tonight, we couldn't be bothered to wait until 8pm to get the free meal. Then we chilled out for a bit. I went and used the free internet to speak to my sister and dad on Skype. It was really nice to see him but for some reason the sound wasn't working! It was funny watching my dad pace up and down my sisters living room, I could tell he was swearing out loud lol.
I stayed in there until the shop closed and even then I stood outside using the wifi. Chris eventually came over and we went back to the room together. We were both knackered so went to bed by 9am. Tomorrow we will be flying back to Sydney where we catch our connecting flight to New Zealand! Only one problem though, we have to sleep in the airport, should be an interesting night!
