We chose to stay at our hostel because we got a private room for cheap, but also because they offer free breakfast in the morning. Well, we didn't make it up in time so had to go out and buy our own. Breakfast was from 7:15am to 8:45am! That doesn't leave much time for a lay in! After brekkie we got ready and went out to find a shop called Deep Sea Divers Den. My dive instructor back in Thailand recomended them to us, she said she worked as a hostie on board one of their boats, making up cabins and helping out with cleaning etc, in return she got free accommodation and diving! We fancied some of that so looked them up. Diving on the Great Barrier Reef is so expensive, we don't want to spend too much on just a couple of dives so hopefully we can get ourselves a few extra more for free!
Twenty minutes later and eventually we had found the shop. We started talking to a lady behind the desk and told her what we were looking for. She smiled and told us that they do have availability on one of their boats, leaving on the 10th for 5 days. We told her that would fit in with our plans perfectly! Then she asked if we were both qualified divers and told us what the work would involve. We got really excited about it then she told us they only need one person, b****!! It was obvious we wanted to do It together, they could have told us that in the beginning. She kept a slight grin on her face as if she wanted to piss us off! Then she said one of us could pay to go on as a guest and the other could work! There was no way, it was too expensive for just one person and there was no way one of us would watch the other work while laying around in luxury. I knew how badly Chris wanted to dive on the reef so I told him to go on his own and I would stay in a hostel sun bathing and chilling out but he kept refusing. He wanted to check other dive shops around the city and see if they had any boats that offered two hostie positions. So we turned around and started heading out when suddenly I saw Jasmine standing outside! Excitedly I went running over to her and gave her a big hug, we started chatting then arranged to meet each other within the next few days for a few drinks.
On our way further into the city we passed some apartments that Blonde and Brunette Emma were staying in, so we went in to find them and say hello. Unfortunately they weren't in so we left a note to say we called by.
A couple of more streets away and we came across another dive shop called Pro Dive. We went in to see if they had any hostie positions available but they didn't offer any at all. They recommended we go down to the harbour at 4:30pm when the boats get in and ask directly. It sounded like a good idea so we decided to go down there later. It wasn't even 1pm yet so we went into a shopping centre to buy some food and find a travel ex shop so we could top up our spending money, we couldn't believe we only had $45 left on our card!!! Australia was eating up so much of our money! We found the shop and spoke to a lady who explained she couldn't help us because our card was issued in the UK, it seemed silly really because it was the same company! The lady must have heard that line a thousand times because she completely agreed with us and apologised straight away. You'd think it would be easy enough to just transfer the money online but the connection in the centre was so bad it kept dropping out. Plus the website was confusing, we kept going round in circles until eventually giving up and stormed back over to the lady in the shop. Hopefully we could use her phone to sort it, when we got there she was already on the phone finding out what we needed to do! She didn't have to do that but she did everything she could to help us. It ended up taking about an hour to sort out and Chris was being passed from one line to another, I was surprised at how calm he stayed the whole time! Finally it was all sorted and Chris hung up.
Fed up and hungry we went into Coles to do some food shopping then we checked if the girls were back in their apartment again, they weren't so we walked back to our hostel which took thirty minutes! By now my feet were aching and I was starving, it was a hot day too, I was done with walking around! We must have walked about 10km already! Poor Chris had to put up with my whining lol.
We stuffed ourselves as soon as we got back then had a cup of tea in our room. Right then all I wanted to do was be lazy and put my aching feet up! But there was no time, we had to get back down to the other end of town so we could be there when the dive boats came in! This time I wanted to walk along the sea front, at least there would be a breeze there. I was sick of walking down the same streets! The sea must have been out because all we could see for miles was brown muddy looking sand! There were signs up saying beware of crocodiles so we kept a look out for them but we didn't see any.
As we got closer to the marina we could see lots of boats already heading back, at least one of them had to have two hostie positions available! We waited on the decking for a moment while passengers came off then we walked down each of the piers and asked at five different boats. Each of them said go and check with the office! It wasn't what we were hoping for but at least we got some addresses to go to instead of wasting time wondering around the city. One of the guys from a boat said they had two hosties coming off soon so we went to check at their office first and just as they said there were two coming off! We found the office and were excited to be told they had a couple leaving on the 10th! It was perfect for us! There was only one downfall though, we would have to pay for a two day, six dive trip before we could start which cost $420 each! It was quite a lot of money but if we get to stay on for a few more nights afterwards and get enough diving in then it should be worth it. Chris didn't want to book straight away, he wasn't sure if the guy was lying to us about having to pay as guests, so he asked the guy to hold the positions for us while we went to get the money out but really we went around the corner to the boats main office. It turned out he was telling the truth so we got the money out and went back to him and booked. I quite like the idea of being guests first and not thrown straight into it and if we don't like it we can always change our minds and come off, otherwise we are guaranteed at least three hostie days on board. We actually have a maximum of five days to play with so Chris is hoping we can stay on for all of them! But we will have to see how it goes and if we can. We left the shop feeling excited and very lucky! We wanted to tell the Emma's our news so we checked one last time if they were back in their apartment yet. At last they were in! We had a chat and arranged to go for drinks tonight. So we walked another 30 minutes back to ours, AGAIN!!
We had dinner then got ready for tonight, we didn't end up leaving our room until 9pm. Chris picked up a 4 litre box of goon and some sprite for us all to share in the girls apartment which went down too easily! The night was still young so we decided to leave and head out. Chris didn't want a crazy night so we went to the first bar we came too which had a live band playing, it wasn't too busy but had a good atmosphere. I knew Chris only had to have a few more beers and he would change his mind, the bar got quieter so we headed for some where livelier! We found a really lively pub/club that we can't remember the name of, I think it was called The Lounge. It cost $5 to get in and we got a pitcher of vodka and cranberry and vodka/green stuff for only $10! That was cheap so we all got one each! We spent the night dancing and having a good laugh. We were doing jelly shots and Chris kept getting free ones off the girl serving them! We got a second jug each, this one was a bit weaker, Chris flirted with the girl serving him so he got extra vodka in the first jugs! She must of realised he was with me afterwards so wouldn't make the second ones any stronger!!
We left when it closed at 3:30am, we were all smashed and in need of greasy food! Us girls begged for a free pie each at Pie Face but we didn't get anything! We must have looked so stupid lol, in the end we went to Mc Donald's. It was a great night and we were really glad we found the girls. We said goodbye to them then did the long walk back to ours, of course it was bloody 4:30am by the time we got into bed! Hangover tomorrow? I definitely think so.
