It's our last day in Oz today but be are really looking forward to getting to New Zealand and starting all over again in another country. We are especially looking forward to sleeping in our camper van for the whole time and not having to do any packing for a whole month! There are two things I am not looking forward to though, the cold weather and the Nevis Bungy jump in Queenstown! I just hope I can go through with it.
So we checked out of Coronas Backpackers, washed and dried our laundry then caught the bus to the airport at 3:45pm. Everything went smoothly through check in and immigration and our flight to Sydney left on time at 5:20pm. We originally had an earlier flight booked but we didn't want to end up staying in a Sydney hotel for one night, spending $40 on a cab to into the city, then $50 on somewhere to stay for a few hours and another $40 to get back to the airport at 4am. Which is why we have chosen to sleep in the airport instead. We saw so many backpackers sleeping in the airport in Darwin and they didn't look so bad so hopefully we will find ourselves a quiet spot.
We had three seats on the flight as it wasn't that busy and both watched This Means War, it was a really good film but the ending was predictable. We wish we hadn't stuffed ourselves with Burger King before the flight because our flight meal wasn't actually that bad, we still finished them though!
It took just under three hours to get to Sydney so we landed at 8:05pm. We weren't in a rush as we had no where to go so we took our time getting off and going through customs. Straight away we could feel the temperature drop from Cairns and Sydney, but we know it's still alot warmer than what we can expect in New Zealand.
By now it was getting late and it looked like the airport was about to close. We walked around looking for somewhere to sleep for the night but all the chairs had arms on them so it was impossible to spread out and there was no where with carpet, just marble flooring! We went and found a Qantas desk and asked a lady if she knew anywhere we could spend the night as the airport was closing. She looked a little surprised at us but was also intrigued. She looked behind her and around the desks as if maybe we could set up there but then she wasn't sure. It didn't look good. The lady called out to one of her colleges and asked if she knew of a place. Her colleague said the only place was by the entrance near to the car park lifts. Then she commented "it's a bit dirty around there though." Oh well we didn't have much choice, we picked up our bags, thanked the ladies and made our way there.
Ok so the floor was a little bit dirty with muddy footprints and the seats still had arms on them, but with a little imagination I was sure I could create a sleep-able bed for the night lol. We found a row of four empty seats right opposite the lifts, more and more backpackers arrived and took up the seats in the larger area so I think we were lucky to get these which were just around the corner from them. I pulled out my blanket and tried to flatten out all lumps and bumps in my backpack so I could lay across it on the chairs. Chris laughed at me as I tried it out, it wasn't that bad but I think I would have rolled off while I slept. Chris went to the toilets nearby to get changed, it was getting really cold now and it didn't help that the entrance door kept automatically opening every time someone walked by! When he got back he sat in the chair on the end and pulled his blanket over himself, "That's me done" he said and stuck his iPod in and closed his eyes. I looked at him, there was no way I would be able to sleep while sitting up straight. I shoved my bag about a bit more until eventually I managed to get comfy. It was going to be a long night for sure even though our flight was only in six hours.
One bloody hour later! The cleaners arrived with their heavy machinery and wanted to start cleaning the muddy floor! We opened up our eyes, by now the whole area was full of backpackers trying to get to sleep. Some were laying on the floor, they must have been freezing! Security announced to everyone that they had to get the cleaning done, they apologised for the noise in advance and kept repeating that it will be loud. Well, I think loud was a bloody understatement! We turned up our iPods but then the music was too loud to go to sleep to. We changed positions and closed our eyes and tried our best to sleep. I think Chris nodded off but I kept drifting in and out.
About another hour later and the security guard was waking us up again! He wanted to move our row of chairs so the cleaners could get underneath them! We couldn't argue and we didn't help them. We stood up and let the guys move the heavy chairs so now we were facing the rest of the backpackers. Most of them only had one seat while we had four, oh well lol. We pulled our hoods over faces and tried again to go back to sleep.
It was no good, I think we both managed to get an hours sleep all together, we were so pleased when it was time to check in for our flight! As I walked around the corner towards the toilet I suddenly realised how many people actually spent the night! There were hundreds of backpackers sprawled out in rows across the floor, they were all lying right next to each other and stretched all the way around the halls. Most of them looked completely out of it, I wish we had slept around there with them! There was a que of people brushing their teeth in the ladies and the whole thing felt very normal, like it happens every night!
I went back out and met Chris then we checked in. You can imagine how tired we were so obviously we fell straight to sleep as soon as we got on the plane. Next stop, dream land, then New Zealand.
