We got up a bit earlier today to go on the free tour to see the Sydney sights. We met up with the guide by the cathedral and waited around until he was ready to start moving. He Introduced himself and highlighted the fact that the tour was free and he worked for tips. We both thought he was a bit strange. After ten minutes we were extremely bored, the guide wasn't allowed to take us into anywhere that required an entrance fee because it was a free tour, he and his girlfriend basically have been giving out flyers and walking tours around Sydney. He showed us some really un-interesting things like a clock and a statue of a dog which he found hilarious. We ran away from the group as soon as we could!
We walked down to Sydney Harbour by ourselves, along the way we stopped to listen to an Aboriginal play the didgeridoo, finally we got to watch someone! It's a really unique sound, really strange but I like it. He called over to us so I went and got a photo sitting next to him. He passed me another didgeridoo to hold as I sat down and asked me if I could play, I laughed and said no. I was surprised when he spoke with an Aussie accent, I guess I was expecting him to speak aboriginal because of the way he was dressed in tribal gear and had face paint on. We thanked the guy and gave him some change then carried on walking along the waterfront. As we walked we passed a few more didgeridoo players, some were playing to clubby music, it sounded quite cool but I don't imagine it being played in any Ibiza clubs any time soon.
Finally we made it to the big white Opera House. We looked up at it and thought it looked very nice but to be honest we weren't that excited about it. In fact we didnt even bother taking a photo of it, we'll just steal one from google later. We did take a photo of the bridge though which was on the other side of the harbour. Chris noticed a group of people climbing near the top of the bridge, It's alot higher than we thought! He really wants to climb it too but it's so expensive, $208 each! I told him he can just go on his own but he still thinks it's too expensive, plus you can't use your own camera to take photos up there, you have to buy theirs which are really expensive too.
The area around the Harbour was very nice, there were lots of classy bars and restaurants, too expensive for us though. There was also a Guillians Belgium Chocolate cafe! Ooh it looked delish but of course that was too expensive too. Chris is a bit frustrated that we can't just sit in a cafe and have a cup of coffee with a muffin without spending at least £15! And thats just for a small one! It's probably not really that expensive but after being in Asia it's hard not to compare prices.
We were going to walk around to the other side of the harbour but my feet were beginning to ache already and I could feel blisters coming up between my toes (bloody new shoes!) so we didn't. Instead we caught a free bus back and had lunch in our room.
After lunch I changed my shoes and we went back out. We booked the greyhound bus for tomorrow leaving at 6pm heading to Byron Bay. We're looking forward to some beach again, hopefully the weather will be nice and warm, it should be the more north we go.
After booking our bus we went shopping! This time only Chris got something, I found him two pairs of really nice jeans for only $34! He was a bit apprehensive at first because he doesn't think he will wear them much, but I think he will, especially when we go to cold New Zealand and I want him to have a pair in case we go out drinking one night and he needs them :-)
Later on we went and sat in Hyde Park and lazed in the sun for a few hours. The sun was a lot hotter than we thought, even with a chilly breeze I could feel my legs burning under my legginings and had to cover them up!
As the sun set we went back in and started to get ready for tonight. We arranged to meet Susan and Lucy at 7:30pm in Scary Canaries bar, next door to their hostel Base. Chris was moaning because we were running five minutes late but I kept telling him to chill, they're girls, they will probably be late too. We wouldn't have run late if the safe in our room hadn't broken just as we were leaving, luckily the receptionist sent someone up to fix it. I mentioned about the glass plate to them but said it was missing when we got here, rather than say Chris broke it. They sent a maintenance man and luckily he just replaced it for us without any questioning.
Just as I thought, when we arrived in Scary Canaries the girls weren't there, so we went to reception and asked if we could go find them in their dorm room. Surprisingly the receptionist said it was fine even though we could have been anyone! Before we even began to go up, I could hear Susan's Scottish accent coming from the stairways, it turned out it was her and Lucy. The two of them looked very lovely in their outfits and I was kinda regretting that I didn't pack one of my many going out dresses I have back at home (I know what I'll be shopping for next).
We all sat down at a table and me and Chris bought a bottle of wine to share. The night happened to be inappropriate bingo night so we bought our cards and hoped to win some free drinks or even the big cash prize. Unfortunately we didn't win any money, we came so close though! I did managed to win us a few shots by shouting out inappropriate things lol I felt like a nutter but it was fun. We switched to vodka and cranberry then went up to Susan's dorm to finish off a box of goon. At first I felt bad about some of the other people in the room but then they joined us for a few drinks. I remember one guy though, sitting on his top bunk staring at me. I thought he wanted to join us so asked him to come down, turned out he was just pissed off that he couldn't sleep lol oops. We finished off the goon and headed back to our hotel around 1am, it was a good night and nice to see Susan again.
